NTDP Notes

Below you will find the schedules of the National Team Development Program Under 17 and Under 18 teams.

The Under 18 Team plays opponents from Division I and Division III, NAHL, and the Indiana Ice of the USHL. They also play in International Tournaments. The Under 17 plays in the NAHL and International Tournaments.

USA Hockey also said that the Under 17 roster will be announced later this week. The Under 18 roster will be announced next week. Chris Heisenberg has the unofficial rosters. It should interesting to see what the Under 17 team looks like.

A poster on the WHLFans forum received this email regarding Under 18 player Drew Shore.

There was a persisting rumor at the Select 17's in St. Cloud (which I attended for McKeen's) that he was heading to the WHL this year. He even sat out one of the games and was seen near the locker rooms talking with Team USA officials.

My closest source to this issue says he thinks Drew is going to the WHL. This is all rumor and my gut says he would stick with the USNTDP, but you never know? Especially if Jeremy Morin etc. take off first.

Shore is a dynamic player, great speed and skill for a big kid. He would be a huge addition to Chilliwack.
Shore WHL rights belong to the Chilliwack Bruins. Last year with the Under 17 Team, he had 13 goals and 25 assists in 54 games. He's committed to Denver University for 2009.

Not NTDP related but defenseman Greg Pateryn has been added to Under 20 Evaluation Camp roster. He's incoming freshman at Michigan. Last year with the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets, he had 3 goals, 24 assists, 145 penalty minutes in 60 games.

Drayson Bowman Signs With Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced they have come to terms with Drayson Bowman who was their third round pick in 2007. Bowman, 19, has spent the last three years with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL and winning the WHL Championship and the Memorial Cup last season. Last year he had 42 goals and 40 assists in 66 contests. He also had 11 goals and 9 assists in 21 games in the playoffs.

After a strong start to the season, he wasn't named to Team USA's World Junior team. Starting on Friday he will be in Lake Placid until August 9th for Team USA's Summer Evaluation camp. Team USA will have exhibition games against Sweden and Finland. I can't see USA Hockey not picking him this year. If they don't, they don't want to win.

Colin Bowman is Drayson's younger brother. He plays for the Kelowna Rockets also of the WHL. He was named to USA squad that will head to the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in August.

Colin Long also of the Kelowna Rockets, his dad felt the earthquake in California. He's alright. Colin will join Drayson at the Evaluation camp on Friday. He had 31 goals and 69 assists last season and was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes this summer.

Even though Tyson Barrie isn't drafted yet, he's attending Tampa Bay's rookie camp this week. His dad is Len Barrie who just bought the Lighting. With the Kelowna Rockets last year, he had 9 goals and 34 assists in 64 games. Tyson who's a defenseman is pegged as a late first round or early second pick for next year's draft.

Forwards

Maxim Karpov Mechel, Chelyabinsk

I don't know too much about any of the players. I know Kirill Kabanov is highly touted for the 2010 Draft. Maxim Kitsyn should be a Russian to watch for in the 2009 Draft. One omission is Andrei Kuchin who's also highly touted for next year's draft. Rumors are that he's not the best of teammates and can be lazy on the ice. I wouldn't be surprised if he falls in the draft. Most of the players played at the World Under-17 Challenge last year.

Some potential bad news for the Windsor Spitfires, their first selection in the Import Draft, Richard Panik, is staying in the Czech Republic. Here's a shorter translation.

OHL News and Notes

I found this story in my in-box tonight. I did see Andrew Fournier heading to the Florida Everglades of the ECHL. What's interesting is the Everglades and the Plymouth Whalers are owned by the same person. There were three former Whalers on the Everglade roster last year.

Whenever I see this name it brings back the 2007 Memorial Cup, when he scored the game winner against the Maineiacs in overtime in pool play. The Whalers then defeated the Maineiacs a couple of nights later in the tie breaker game to send Lewiston home. There's no relation between us.

The Noof forum which is an OHL fan forum has a thread that lists all the 1st rounders that I have signed. So far six first rounder have signed. That total should start climbing with training camps starting in a month or so. Looking at that list, I say 18 of the 20 first rounders to be signed. Right now, Cam Fowler and Brandon Saad not to sign this year. A commentator on my blog said yesterday that Saad has committed to the Spirit. Next year though he will be in the NAHL.

Leigh Salters and Denis Hollenstein will start the season in the press box this season for the Guelph Storm. Salters is going to be out until December and Hollenstein for the entire season. Salters had 10 goals, 11 assists, and 92 penalty minutes in 59 games last year. He's an undrafted player. Hollenstein had five goals and four assists last year in 37 contests.

The cause of Mickey Renaud's death was released yesterday. It was due to natural causes from his heart condition. He had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He passed away on February 18th. This Youtube channel has tributes to Renaud and the ceremony when the Windsor Spitfires returned to the ice.

These heart conditions are popping up one too many times. David Carle who played for Shattuck St. Mary's last year and is headed to Denver University had to retire because doctors found a heart condition.

Benn Leads Team Red

Ottawa, On- Jamie Benn continued to be hot at the Canadian World Junior Development Camp. He added another goal and an assist in Team Red's 4-2 victory over Team White in front of 1,000 fans at the University of Ottawa. Team Red took the bragging rights as they won the mini series 2 games to 1.

Maxime Sauvé (Val D'Or Foreurs, QMJHL, Boston) got the scoring started with 1:03 remaining in the period. Assists went to Jamie Benn (Kelowna Rockets, WHL, Dallas) and Mark Katic (Sarnia Sting, OHL, New York Islanders).

Jamie Benn continues his hot development came. He got an unassisted tally at the 6:31 mark. Cody Hodgson (Brampton Battalion, OHL, Vancouver) got Red out to a 3-0 lead five seconds before the midway point of the second act. The helpers went to Tyler Myers (Kelowna Rockets, WHL, Buffalo) and Chris Chris DiDomenico (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL, Toronto). John Tavares (Oshawa Generals, OHL, 2009) got White on the board with 52 seconds to go in the period. Alex Pietrangelo (Niagara IceDogs, OHL, St. Louis) and Nicolas Deschamps (Chicoutimi Sagueneens, QMJHL, Anaheim) set up the goal.

Grinder Colton Gillies (Saskatoon Blades, WHL, Tampa Bay) got the Red's lead back to three. The assists went to Yann Sauvé (Saint John Sea Dogs, OHL, Vancouver) and Brandon Sutter (Red Deer Rebels, WHL, Carolina). 17 seconds remaining, Patrice Cormier (Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL, New Jersey) cut Red's lead in half. The helpers went to Ottawa 67's forward Logan Couture (San Jose) and Kesley Tessier (Quebec Ramparts, QMJHL, Colorado).

Dustin Tokarski (Spokane Chiefs, WHL, Tampa Bay) started the game for Team Red and didn't allow any goals. Jake Allan (Montreal Junior, QMJHL, St. Louis) allowed two goals. They combined to stop 25 shots. Team White had Chet Pickard (Tri-City Americans, WHL, Nashville) and he allowed three goals. Tyson Sexsmith (Vancouver Giants, WHL, San Jose) only allowed one goal in the time he saw.

The Canadian Press has a feature on Kyle Turris on whether he will wear Red and White In December. My gut feeling is that he will stick with the Phoenix Coyotes. He didn't leave Wisconsin to play in the AHL. The article also mentions other players that might be in the NHL this season.

TSN's Hockey Canada section has interviews from the camp.

New Commitments

Here's a couple of commitments from Chris Heisenburg site.

The Lake Superior State got a verbal commitment from from Detroit's Catholic Central goaltender Tyler Marbles. He's a 92 and has committed for the 2010 season. His stats from last year are unavailable from last year. According to Heisenburg site, he will be with the Detroit Honeybaked program of the MWEHL next year.

1990 goaltender Alex Vazzano has committed to Union College for the Fall of 2010. He played at the Gunnery School in Connecticut. His brother John Vazzano is also a goaltender at Gunnery. He's from Turnball, Connecticut, the same town that Chris Drury is from.

Northern Michigan received a commitment from 90 born forward Stephan Vigier for the 2010-2011 season. Last year he played with the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He led the team with 86 points, including 37 goals in 60 games. The next two years he play for Sioux City of the USHL.

Team White Takes Game Two

Ottawa, On- After losing by three goals Sunday night, Team White came out flying on Monday. They scored the first four goals to start the game. Team Red didn't back down though as they scored three unanswered goals but it wasn't enough. The White squad held onto the 4-3 victory.

177 seconds into the game, Louie Caporusso (Michigan, CCHA, Ottawa) scored on a penalty shot to give White the early lead (Instead of 2 minute penalties, they reward a penalty shot.). That was the only goal of the stanza. The goal beat Jake Allen (Montreal Junior, QMJHL, St. Louis)

179 seconds into the second, Alex Pietrangelo (Niagara Ice Dogs, OHL, St. Louis) scored on his penalty shot. That goal went pass future teammate Jake Allen. At the 5:40 mark, Kyle Turris (Phoenix Coyotes) gave the White Team the 3-0 lead. Assists went to Nicolas Deschamps (Chicoutimi Saguennens, QMJHL, Anaheim) and John Tavares (Oshawa Generals, OHL, 2009). Greg Nemisz (Windsor Spitfires, OHL, Calgary) got the game winner with 1:56 remaining in the period. The goal went past Dustin Tokarski (Spokane Chiefs, WHL, Tampa Bay). The helpers went to Nick Ross (Kamloops Blazers, WHL, Phoenix) and Dana Tyrell (Prince George Cougers, WHL, Tampa Bay). 28 seconds later P.K. Subban (Belleville Bulls, OHL, Montreal) got Red on the board with a penalty shot. He beat Chet Pickard (Tri-City, WHL, Nashville).

Just under two minutes into the third period, at the 1:50 mark, Tyler Ennis (Medicene Hat Tigers, WHL, Buffalo) cut the lead into half. Chris Terry (Plymouth Whalers, OHL, Carolina) and Jamie Benn (Kelowna Rockets, WHL, Dallas) got the assists. Jared Spurgeon (Spokane Chiefs, WHL, New York Islanders) got the Red team within one just before the midway point of the period, at 9:36 mark. The helpers went to Terry and Ennis.

Tyson Sexsmith (Vancouver Giants, WHL, San Jose) and Chet Pickard combined to stop 24 of the 27 shots they saw. Allan and Tokarski stopped 20 shots.

The Three Stars Were:

3. Red Tyler Ennis

2. Red Chris Terry

1. White Alex Pietrangelo

The game was seen by 1,000 fans at the University of Ottawa. The rubber match is tomorrow to end the camp.

The Tampa Bay Lighting will announce the Steven Stamkos signing tomorrow. He was the number one selection in this year's draft.

Brandon Saad to Saginaw?

Rumors on the 92 Hockey Message Board has 92 forward Brandon Saad heading to the Saginaw Spirit. On the message board it says he has turned down a spot on the National Team Development Program Under 17.

I can't say I believe this report but the Spirit are making a push for him. He was the tenth overall selection in this year's draft. Saad is a 6'1, 185lbs, forward who was apart of the Pittsburgh Hornets Major Midget team (MWEHL) last season. He had 11 goals and 19 assists in 26 contests.

I highly doubt the Spirit would use a high pick on a player that might not report. So they must of gotten reassurance that he would report. At the same time it makes me wonder why the Erie Otters didn't select him? I think its because they had a few picks last year that didn't show up.

If this report is true, its another loss for USA Hockey.

That same message board is also reporting that defenseman Stephen Johns will report to the National Team Development Program. He also was apart of the Pittsburgh Hornets Major Midget team. He had four goals and seven assists in 26 contests. Earlier this summer, he said he wasn't going to show up in Windsor. He was a third round selection the 2008 Draft,

It's a good move to go to the NTDP this season. The Spitfires have no room for him this season. My believe is they much rather have Cam Fowler in this season then Johns. The best interest for both parties is to have Johns develop with the NTDP this season. If Johns decides to go to the OHL route in a year or two, the Spitfires will welcome him with open arms.

Canada Camp Opens

Ottawa, On- The Canada World Junior Championship Development camp had its first inter squad game today. Team Red defeated Team White 4-1. It's the first of three games of this camp. Team Red was led by Nazem Kadri (London Knights, OHL) who had a goal and an assist. He played for the Kitchener Rangers last year but traded this summer to London to complete the Steve Mason deal.

Team White jumped out early when phenom John Tavares (Oshawa Generals, OHL) was rewarded with a penalty shot. He beat Dustin Tokarski (Spokane Chiefs, WHL, Tampa Bay), the 2008 Memorial Cup MVP. The game would stay that way until Luke Schenn (Kelowna Rockets, WHL, Toronto) got the game back to even. Cody Hodgson (Brampton, Battalion, OHL, Vancouver) got the only assist.

With 3:52 remaining in the second, Kadri scored on a penalty shot that beat Tyson Sexsmith (Vancouver Giants, WHL, San Jose).

Team Red put the game away early in the third period. Chris DiDomenico (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL, Toronto) lit the lamp with assists going to Kadri and Mark Katic (Sarnia Sting, OHL, New York Islanders). The goal came at the 4:14 mark. 2:40 later Jamie Benn (Kelowna Rockets, WHL, Dallas) put the nail in the coffin. The helpers went to Tyler Ennis (Medicene Hat Tigers, WHL, Buffalo) and Eric O'Dell (Sudbury Wolves, OHL, Anaheim).

Jake Allen (Montreal Junior, QMJHL, St. Louis) and Dustin Tokarski defended Team Red's net. They combined to stop 22 of the 23 shots. Team White netminders were Tyson Sexsmith and Chet Pickard (Tri-City, WHL, Nashville). Both of them combined to stop 35 of the 39 shots they saw.

The three stars were:

3. White John Tavares

2. Red Nazem Kadri

Greg McKegg Signs With Erie

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced that Greg McKegg the second overall selection in May's OHL Priority Selection has signed a contract.

The 16 year old forward played with the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs where he had 73 goals and 53 assists in 64 games. He hails from St. Thomas, Ontario. The Otters made him the second overall selection after the Sudbury Wolves picked highly touted forward John McFarland from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens program.

In other Erie Otters news, the team will have a fundraiser for former Otter Jason Baird. He injured himself riding a lawn mower. In his four year OHL career, which he spent all four with the Otters, his best season was in 2000-2001. He had 30 goals and 58 assists in 68 games.

Erie will be without 18 year old defenseman Mitch Gaulton this season as he underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. He had two goals and five assists in 20 games last year. The New York Rangers selected him in the 6th round of the 2008 Draft.

Garrett Peterson Commits to Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish received a verbal commitment from Team Illinois Major Midget forward Garrett Peterson for the 2010 season. Last year in the MWEHL Major Midget division, he had 8 goals and 12 assists in 25 games. At the Select 17's he had a goal and an assist in five games. He also had 34 penalty minutes. He will join Team USA at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament that runs from August 12th to August 16th in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

Notre Dame has a pipeline in Illinois. They also got a commitment from T.J. Tynan a forward in February also of the Chicago Mission program for either the 2010 or 2011 season. He played on the Under 16 team where he had 9 goals and 16 assists in 30 games. He will play for the National Team Development Progam Under 17 team.At the Select 16's he had a goal and two assists in five games. They also got a commitment from defenseman Robbie Russo this past April for the Fall of 2011. With the U16 Team he had 2 goals and five assists in 31 contests. He should be at the Select 15's next month.

As I mentioned earlier this week, Chris McCarthy will join Boston College for the 2010 season. He played at Berkshire last season, his stats are very difficult to find. He had five goals and 10 points at the Select 17's two weeks ago. He will also join Team USA at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament.

Filatov Contract Status?

According to The Hockey News, Nikita Filatov contract with his Russian Club Team, CSKA Moscow, was rewritten when the KHL was formed. I find it hard to believe that CSKA Moscow did things the right way. Filatov even said his contract was up and he was ready to head North America. Remember this is CSKA Moscow we are talking about. Or "The Red Army Team" that was known for playing against NHL teams and their roster was 90% of the USSR Olympic Team. It doesn't really surprise me that they are using their USSR tactics to control players.

This bad news for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Sudbury Wolves. Both teams thought he would be in North America this year. There's still a chance he comes over but with no transfer agreement, things get complicated. I do believe the Canadian Hockey League and the IIHF has their own sperate transfer agreement but the compensation will be too little for Russia's liking. The KHL wants 1.5 million for Nikita Filatov and its highly unlikely for them to lower that price to the Sudbury Wolves.

Hopefully if Filatov is held against his wishes, he says no to them for the World Junior Championships come December. He has already drafted so why does it matter him? As of right now he suspended from IIHF competition but that ban should be lifted by December.

Ethan Werek Will Head to the USHL

Ethan Werek who played for the Stouffville Spirit of Ontario Provincial Junior "A" Hockey League last season will play for the Indiana ICE this upcoming season. He's committed to Boston University for the 2009 season. With the Spirit which his dad is a co-owner he had 29 goals and 41 assists in 37 contests. He was a 1st round selection of the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL in 2007. There was a rumor last summer that he would join the Frontenacs this past season but they were false.

When Werek gets on the BU campus he will rejoin former teammate Corey Trivino. With the Spirit last year Trivino had 19 goals and 50 assists. At the World Under 18 in April, he had four goals and three assists in seven games. Trivino was a second round selection of the New York Islanders this past June. Before joining the Terriers, he play in front of former Boston University goalie Brett Bennett who's a 5th round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2006. Bennett was 16-10-3 last year with the Terriers and with a 2.62GAA and a .888SV%.

The Windsor Star had some notes on Cam Fowler, the Windsor Spitfires 1st round selection in the 2008 OHL Entry Draft and Richard Panik their Import pick. Fowler will be at the USA World Junior Evaluation Camp next month in Lake Placid, NY. He will be the youngest player their. Right now he's slated to go back to the National Team Development Program with the Under 18 team. He has said he will finish his commitment with the National Program and the 2009-2010 season he's undecided. He has commited to Notre Dame for the 2009-2010 season. Some say he might go to the OHL route so he can dominate the younger competition then play against older players. Panik its either play against pros in the Czech Republic or play against his age group. I can't see the Spitfires use a high pick on him if they didn't have deal in place with him.

Speaking of the USA NTDP U-18 Team, USA Hockey released the Four Nations Tournament that will take place November 4th to November 8th. That tournament will also be held in Lake Placid. The Women's Four Nations will also be held at the same time.

A Family Rivalry Is Born

The Western College Hockey Blog is reporting tonight that Belle Tire forward Austin Czarnik has committed to Michigan State for the fall of 2011. With the Belle Tire U-16 Team last year he had 7 goals and 14 assists in 31 contests. At the Select 16, he had seven goals and two assists in five contests. He was selected for the Five Nations Tournament that takes place August 19th through August 24th in Slovakia. He has also earned a spot on the National Team Development Program Under 17 Team also.

His cousin is Robbie Czarnik who will be a freshman at Michigan this season. With the NTDP last season Robbie had 15 goals for a total of 30 points in 49 contests. At the Under 18 tournament in April he had three goals and five assists in 8 contes. He was also a third round selection of the Los Angeles Kings this summer.

The San Jose Sharks have come to terms with Timo Pielmeier of the Shawinigan Cataractes and Tyson Sexsmith of the Vancouver Giants who are both goalies. Pielmeier had a 23-26 record with a 2.94GAA and a .911SV% with the St. John's Fog Devils last season. He was traded this summer to Shawinigan. Sexsmith had a 43-11-6 record with a 1.89GAA and a .911SV%. He could be one of the backstoppers for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships this winter.

Some sad news to end with. Former Green Mountain Glades (EJHL) forward Ben Kinson has passed away due to injuries he suffered in a car accident. Last year he had a goal and three assists in 37 matches. This upcoming season, he was headed to Plymouth State College a Division III program. My Thoughs and Prayers go out to his family.

The Chowder Cup Is Underway

The Chowder Cup got underway this morning in Foxboro, Massachusetts and Dedham, Massachusetts. Three games have already been completed and the South Shore Dynamos have defeated the Mass Mariners 9-1. After committing to Boston College yesterday, Billy Arnold had a goal and two assists in the win. Mission Prospects beat the Northern Connecticut Wings by a score of 2-0. District 10 Selects had a 4-1 victory against the Mass Northstars.

The London Free Press did a story on the tournament focusing on the London Knights. It also mentions the alumni team that will be heading to Europe to face some European teams. At first some people thought the actual London Knights were heading to Europe. The team looks pretty good so far with Sam Gagner, Rob Schremp, Brandon Prust, Dylan Hunter, Marc Methot and Adam Dennis on the roster. Some NHL teams aren't allowing their players to play which I understand. I am surprised Gagner is on the team because he will be a big part of the Oilers this season.

The Garrett Clarke saga appears to be over. He will be a Maineiac by the end of the week. For those who haven't been following the situation. Back in January, Clarke who's 15 and a defenseman committed to North Dakota for the 2010 season. The newly formed Fargo Force also signed him to play for them this season. He was a highly rated prospect for the QMJHL Draft but it was a forgone conclusion he would slip because of his committment. Clarke stated he wouldn't attend the draft but when Lewiston made their selection of Garrett Clarke he appeared on stage. The day after the draft he verbally committed to the Maineiacs. A week ago rumors were North Dakota and the Fargo Force made on last push but it looks like he has come to term with Lewiston.

Steven Stamkos Won't Be in Ottawa

TSN is reporting that Steven Stamkos won't be participating in the Canada's World Junior development camp in Ottawa next week. The Tampa Bay Lighting made him the 1st overall selection in last month's NHL Entry Draft. Instead Stamkos will be participating in Tampa's rookie camp in Victoria, BC.

Right now I don't see the Lighting releasing him to play in the tournament in December. He will be in the NHL the entire season. It's been a growing trend that teams don't send their World Junior Championship eligible players to the tournament. It's all about getting as much NHL experience as they can. I have no problem with teams not sending their players to the tournament if they holding their own at the NHL level.

It's not like Canada will suffer without Stamkos. The Canadians have the deepest depth chart of any team. Thomas Hickey a Los Angelos Kings prospect and Zach Boychuk a Carolina pick will also not be at next week's camp. Nick Ross, Eric O'Dell, and Louie Caporusso have been added to roster to replace those players.

I highly doubt Kyle Turris and Drew Doughty will be on the team this year. They will also be in the NHL most likely. Doughty is the more likely one to play for Canada but I believe the Kings want him all season in Hollywood.

Here's the rest of the roster and my predictions who will make it next year.

BC isn't done adding players. A poster on the USCHO board says USHR.com is saying Berkshire School center Chris McCarthy will head to the National Champs in 2010. I will have more information later as USHR is a subscription based site.

Two New Commitments

The Crimson Hockey Blog and Chris Heisenberg are reporting that Boston College got a verbal commitment from Bill Arnold who plays for Noble & Greenough Prep in Dedham, Massachusetts. Arnold committed for the 2011-2012 season. He repeated his freshman year last season which isn't unusual for players that go the prep route. In 29 games games last year he had 13 goals and 23 assists. He was also offered a spot to join the National Team Development Program but rumors are that he turned down the offer.

This is the second player that BC received for the 2011 season, K.J. Tiefenwerth of the Mid-Fairfield Midget team in Connecticut committed in August of 2007. It's unkown if Tiefenwerth will go to Chestnut Hill in 2010 or 2011. I saw him two years ago at a regional tournament but couldn't tell you how he plays because I didn't he know about him until he made his commitment. That Mid-Fairfield team had no problem defeating my brother's team in the regionals.

BC will have former Noble & Greenough Prep player Jimmy Hayes coming in. He was a second round selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in this year's draft. Goalie John Muse also attended Noble & Greenough.

Jerry D'Amigo of the USA U-18 NTDP has committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for the fall of 2009, according to the Crimson Hockey Blog. He had 11 goals and 17 assists in 64 contests for the Under 17 squad last year. This is the biggest recruit in the history of the school's program. The biggest name to come out of RPI is Brian Pothier of the Washington Capitals. D'Amigo has also participated in the AHL All Star Game festivities last here. Jeremy Morin also of the NTDP also participated along with Kevin Cole, and Matt Pratt both of the Binghamton Jr. Senators of the AJHL.

Speaking of Morin, he is one of five players on the U-18 team that haven't made a commitment. The other three are Bjorn Krupp (most likely OHL bound), Tyler Amburgey, and Rich Crowley, and David Valek. The Crimson Hockey Blogs says Harvard is interested in Valek.

Justin Faulk Commits to Minnesota-Duluth

The Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs got a verbal commitment from 16 year old defenseman Justin Faulk. Faulk is a St. Paul, Minnesota native. Last year he played for the South St. Paul Packers where had five goals and twelve assists as a sophomore. He just participated at the National Select 16's where he had two goals and an assist.

Both Chris Heisenberg and the Western College Hockey Blog are reporting that he will be on the National Team Development Program Under 17 Team. Before he joins the NTDP, he will be heading to the Five Nations Tournament in Prievidza, Slovakia from August 19th to the 24th.

Faulk isn't the first 92 born to verbally commit to the Bulldogs, Mac Carruth committed back in March. He's a goalie that played for the Chicago Fury Major Midgets of the MWEHL where he had a 6-7-2 record with a 2.75GAA and a .895SV%.

At the U-17 Atlantic Evaluation camp in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, 15 year old Darcy Ashley had a very good day. With Team Black he had a goal an assist in the 5-3 win. Darcy verbally committed to the University of Maine for the 2011-2012 season. He's also a top prospect for next year's QMJHL Draft. He played for Rothesay Netherwood Prep in New Brunswick where he had 160 points in 46 contests. Maine has had bad luck with Rothesay Netherwood players. Kevin Gagne committed this past winter but signed with the Saint John Sea Dogs this summer. He's an underager at this camp as the players around him are 16. This camp is in preparation of the World Under 17 Challenge in December.

Mid Day Notes

Here's some NAHL notes from Michigan Junior Hockey. The Traverse City North Star traded Clinton Bourbonais to the St. Louis Bandits for Travis White.

Ohio State got a commitment from Sean Duddy who played for the Wichita Falls Wildcats last season. He will be attending OSU this fall. This is a very late commitment for the upcoming year.

The Tri-City Americans of the WHL have signed Zach Yuen their 1st round pick. With the North Shore Winterhawks AAA Bantams he had 12 goals, 34 assists, 46 points, and 108 penalty minutes. He won't be able to play full time until the 2009-2010 season.

The Senoir Chowder Cup begins on Thursday. It's a tournament in Boston and the rosters are filled with NCAA, CHL, CJAHL, USHL, and EJHL players. We aren't talking about star players but mostly depth guys. Some of the big names including two defenseman that were drafted by the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado's 1st Round pick in 2007 Kevin Shattenkirk who plays for Boston University and 2006 4th rounder Kevin Montgomery who played for the London Knights last year. The London Knights have half the team participating with the Ontario Knights. That includes their third round pick from this May in Jared Knight. John Henrion a 2009 New Hampshire recruit and a Under-18 National Team Development Program team member will be with Team Farrell.

I said yesterday Yasin Cisse will be with the Des Moines Buccaneers this season. That decision hasn't been made yet. He still deciding on where he wants to play next season.

26CJacob Josefson18383Djurgerden
27FMattias Lindstrom19293Skelleftea
28FJohn Norman17770Djurgerden

Some players to watch out for.

Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi

Eliteprospects.com: An offensive type of player that skates very well, has fine technical skills, excellent hockey sense and a nose for the net. Pääjärvi is very dangerous one-on-one and also a gifted playmaker, although his sniper instinct is more obvious. Pääjärvi always puts up a lot of points. Needs to improve his defensive game as well as work ethic.

My thoughts: He's the player to watch for Sweden. He could be the third player taken at next year's draft.

Anton Mylläri

Eliteprospects.com: A huge and strong defenseman. Mylläri enjoys pretty physical and aggressive. He has very good hockey sense and controls the puck with ease. Good at setting up plays and very solid in his own end. Has some offensive skills as well. Could improve his acceleration and mobility.

My Thoughts: I don't know too much about him but Vasteras knows how to develop defenseman. They have produced the best defenseman of this generation in Nicklas Lidstrom.

Jacob Josefson

Eliteprospects:
Josefsson is a highly skilled center. He plays a strong two-way game is very all-round. Hockey sense is excellent and skating ability and technical skills are very good. Nice creativity with the puck and a skilled playmaker and decent goal scorer. Makes smart decisions and plays a mature game. Gets involved in the rough stuff and has pretty good timing in his hits.

My Thoughts: I am very interested in how he develops this year. He playing on one of the best programs in Sweden.

Anton Lander

Eliteprospects:
A very smart two-way player with excellent hockey sense. Lander reads the game well and makes mature decisions with and without the puck. Plays with plenty of intensity and is skilled offensively.

My Thoughts: He's a teammate of Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi so I think they are on a same line. In a short tournament chemistry is everything.

William Wallén

Eliteprospects:A smallish forward with brilliant qualities as a hockey player. Wallén is a decent skater and a great goal scorer with soft hands. Shows great attitude on the ice and skates hard. Always dangerous and creative with the puck. Is among the most talented Swedish players born 1991.

My Thoughts: He has quite a few teammates from Djurgerden on this team. He could be the best of the Djurgerden bunch. He's going an unlikely route for a Swedish player. He will be heading to the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors of the OHL.

USHL Rosters Are Shaping Up

Ryan over at the Unofficial USHL Blog has a spreadsheet that lists every team's roster.

Players to Watch

Cedar Rapids: Matt Donovan (Denver University), Paul Phillips (Denver University), Greg Burke (University of New Hampshire)

Notes: I am interested to see if Mac Bennett will be called up at some point. He's a Michigan recruit for the 2010 season.

Chicago: I talked about their roster here.

Des Moines: Brett Bruneteau (North Dakota), Ryan Walters (Minnesota), Nick Pryor (Wisconsin), Aaron Crandall (Wisconsin),

Notes: J.P. Parise the father of Zach Parise takes over as the head coach after building the Shattuck St. Mary's program into a powerhouse. I like to see how much time Yasin Cisse receives with the Buccaneers. If not the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL will be making a big push for him to sign with them.

Fargo: Mike Lee (St. Cloud State University), Nathan Condon (Minnesota), and Johnnie Searfoss (Maine).

Notes: The Force got a tough break this summer when their top signee Garrett Clarke bolted to the Lewiston Maineiacs of the QMJHL. Colton St. Claire will most likely be with the National Team Development Program Under 17 Team this season and the WHL trying to recruit him.

Green Bay: Michael Forney and Reid Ellingson

Notes: Both player played in college last year. If they can get Zach Budish and Anders Lee into the line up, that should them offensively.

Indiana: Brett Bennett, Brent Gwidt (Nebraska-Omaha), Ian Ruel (Bowling Green) and Zach Golembiewski (Michigan State)

Notes: They have a lot of young players to watchout for. John Parker is highly regarded 16 year old, they have Stanislav Galiev a 16 year old Russian, and Ethan Werek a 17 year old from Ontario. Parker was drafted by the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. Ranger fans think he will play one year with the Ice and then head to Kitchener.

Lincoln: Jared Festler (St. Cloud State), Travis Erstad (Wisconsin), and Kevin Murdock (Minnesota State)

Notes: This team has a lot of older players which should mean they are looking for a championship.

Omaha: Joey Diamond (Maine), Jake Hauswirth (Michigan Tech), Danny Kristo (North Dakota), and Steven Whitney (Boston College).

Notes: The Lancers are another deep team. Louis LeBlanc another highly touted player from Quebec is on the Affiliated list which I thought he would be in the USHL this year. I am wandering if he's heading to the QMJHL.

Sioux City: Justin Daniels (Northeastern), Drew Daniels (Northeastern), Mitch Bruijsten, Brodie Reid (Northeastern)

Notes: Sioux City is another team that has a lot of 18+ year olds.

Sioux Falls: Luke Greiner (Harvard), Marc Rodriguez (Bowling Green), and Eric Hartzell

Tri-City: I talked about their roster here.

Waterloo: Nick Larson (Notre Dame), Lee Moffie (Michigan), Craig Smith (Wisconsin), and Derek Arnold (Maine)

Notes: There will be a lot of new faces on the Blackhawks but they will bring talent. This team should be very competitive.

The Chilliwack Bruins Signs Their No. 1 Pick

The Chilliwack Bruins have come to terms with Mitch Topping who was the Bruins 1st round pick this past May. Last year with the Red Deer Bantam AAA team he lit the lamp 14 times and added 26 assists. The 6'1 defenseman also had 100 penalty minutes.

Umlike the QMJHL and the OHL, the WHL drafts bantam age players. The other two leagues select midget age players. Topping won't be in the Bruins line up this season on a regular basis but can play in five games. He will return to Red Deer to play for their Midget team this coming season.

The Kamloops Blazers have fired Greg Hawgood as their head coach. He was their on an interim basis last year. Taking Note has some other news from the WHL.

Speaking of coaching hirings, The Peterborough Examiner is reporting that Ken McRae will become the next head coach of the Peterborough Petes. He played in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Quebec Nordiques. He last coached in the Central Hockey League. The Guelph Storm just hired Jason Brooks after David Barr left for a position with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Oshawa Generals still haven't made a hire for a new head coach. Is Paul Maurice the number one candidate?

USA Roster for the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka

USA Hockey has announced the roster for the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka an Under 18 tournament that's held in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. It takes place from August 12th to August 16th.

This team was selected from the Select 17's that were held last week in St. Cloud, Minnesota. This isn't the National Team Development Program team that will play this winter. The Western College Hockey Blog did a nice write up on some of the players.

In goal John Cullen had a 21-4-2 record with a 2.09GAA and a .927SV% with the Maksymum (N.Y.) Hockey Club (Jr. B). Casey DeSmith of Berwick Academy is the other goalie.

On defense, its a veteran group with Beau Schmitz leading the way. He played with the NTDP Under 17 Team last year where he had six goals and nine assists in 59 games. This coming season he will be with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL.

Collin Bowman played in the physical WHL with the Kelowna Rockets. He had two goal and seven assists in 67 games.

Paul Phillips played with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders of the USHL. He had a goal and two assists in 43 contests. That's very good for a 16 year old in the USHL. He's committed to the Denver Pioneers for 2009-2010 season.

Nick Leddy played for Eden Prairie HS in Minnesota where he had 5 goals and 22 assists in 27 games. The Minnesota Golden Gophers is where he will play college hockey.

Eamonn McDermott played with the Cleveland Barons Major Midgets of the MWEHL last season. He had 1 goal and 11 assists in 26 contests. He will be back with the Barons next year.

Brendan Rempel played with one of the best Prep teams in New England in Avon Old Farms.

The only player I am familiar with is Brian Dumoulin. He played with the Biddeford High School Tigers. He led them to two straight Maine Class A State Titles last two seasons. Last year he had 13 goals and 48 assists in 24 league games in an undefeated season. He will be with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League this season.

On offense two players from Minnesota will lead the way. Zach Budish and Ryan Walters. Budish had 26 goals and 37 assists in 31 games for Edina High School. Walters played for St. Thomas Academy. He had 36 goals and 39 helpers in 31 matches. Both will be heading to Minnesota in 2009.

Another guy to watch for is Steven Whitney whlo played for Lawrence Academy. He played for the Under 17 Team at the World Under 17 Challenge in London, Ontario. He had two goals and two assists in six games. He also played in three other games with the U-17 team and recorded one assist. Boston College is his destination in 2009.

Caleb Herbert played for Bloomington Jefferson in Minnesota and had seven points including 4 goals.

Nick Oliver played for the Roseau Rams last year. His stats were 17 goals and 25 assists in 3o contests. He played in front of the home crowd at the Select 17's as he's heading to St. Cloud State.

Tyler Pitlick lit the lamp 25 times and tallied 34 helpers in 28 contests. He will be heading to Minnesota State.

Tyler Brown played for the Plymouth Whalers and had 10 points and which includes six assists in 64 matches.

Christopher McCarthy played for the Berkshire School in Massauchetts.

Shane Berschbach played for the Detroit Little Caesars Major Midget team of the MWEHL. He was a point per game player with 11 tallies and 16 assists in 25 contests. He was drafted by the Indiana Ice of the USHL this summer.

Sean Little saw limited action with Fond du Lac HS in Wisconsin. He had 17 goals and 17 assists in ten contests. He could be with Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL this coming season.

Garrett Peterson had eight goals and twelve assists in 25 contests for Team Illnois of the MWEHL.

Alex Wideman played for the St. Louis Major Midgets last season and has committed to Miami (OH) University for 2010.

Angelo Esposito Signs

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed 2007 1st rounder Angelo Esposito. He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins but was traded at the trade deadline that sent Marian Hossa to the Penguins.

For those who don't know Angelo Esposito, he was a highly touted player coming into the 2005 QMJHL Midget Draft after playing a year with Shattuck St. Mary's out of Fairbault, Minnesota.. The only question was would he play in the QMJHL as rumored to be heading to the NCAA route. The number one player in the draft slipped to 11th overall where Patrick Roy and the Quebec Ramparts selected him. It didn't take long for him to sign.

His first year with the Ramparts he had 39 goals and 59 assists for 98 points 57 games. His teammate was Alexander Radulov who led the entire CHL with 152 points. They wento on to win the Memorial Cup. The last two season his point totals have dropped. In the 2006-2007 season he had 79 points and 69 points last year.

Then at this summer's Midget Draft he was traded to the Montreal Junior who were formerly of the St. John Fog Devils. the Junior traded Jean-Simon Allard (A sniper) 1st round pick (#13), 3rd round pick and a 5th round pick for Esposito. The juniors traded one of the best snipers in the league just to get some attention in Montreal. On a side note most people think that the Junior won't succeed in Montreal.

He has been to the World Junior camp all three years and has been cut all three times. For a player that was once the number one player of his NHL Draft class he fell to the 20th spot. I was once on his bandwaggon but his play has shown he hasn't lived up to the hype. He's not the only player to be cut by Team Canada three times. The other is Dan Cleary who just won the Stanley Cup.

I still have a problem with anyone that thinks the Penguins gave up too much for Hossa. None of the players that the Penguins gave up to get Hossa will ever be Hossa's calibre. The only thing they really gave up was their 1st rounder where the Thrashers selected another high risk, high reward player in Daultan Leveille. Leveille will be heading to Michigan State this year but has only played at the Junior B level.

Will the Thrashers give Esposito a roster spot this year? It's quite possible but he's not NHL ready. It will get the learning curve going on the young players. He could be Ilya Kovalchuk's Robin in Atlanta. If he plays the entire season with Atlanta, Patrick Roy should be charged with highway robbery because their is no clause for compensation if Esposito makes the NHL that I know of.

That's My Take

The Fall Classic is Set

I am not talking about the World Series but an event the United States Hockey League puts on before the regular season. It takes place in Sioux City (Thanks to Ryan, I had Sioux Falls) but not too long ago it was called the "Buc Bowl" as the Des Moines Buccaneers hosted it. Every NHL team and every Division I school was at last year's event. It's an exhibition event.

Michigan Loses Max Pacioretty

Max Pacioretty a former Sioux City Musketeers and now a former Michigan Wolverine has signed with the Montreal Canadiens. He was selected 24th overall in the 2007 Entry Draft. With the Wolverines last season he had 15 goals and 24 assists in 37 games. He should be with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL this year.

It's a big blow to the Wolverines as he was suppose to be one of the main guys this year. They lost Kevin Porter and Chad Kolarik to graduation. They have other players that can fill his role but that puts more responsibilities on the incoming freshman class. They only have two incoming freshman forwards and no one from the 2009 class that could come this season. I am sure they will find someone in a Junior A league. I wander if we will see a player jump ship like Patrick Wiercioch did last week.

Last night I mentioned that Maine has three incoming Swedish recruits, now it's two recruits. The Portland Press Herald is reporting that Pontus Hansson won't be eligible until next season. He's a 20 year old, so I am unsure where he will play next season to keep his eligibility. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if he turns pro in Sweden. Maine was looking to have two freshman to guard the pipes. The other incoming freshman goalie is Scott Darling who played for the Indiana Ice of the USHL last year. The other goalie on Maine's roster is junior Dave Wilson.

Alex Aleardi Signs

It has been a big week for the Cumpuware organization of the Mid West Elite Hockey League. They had defenseman Austin Levi sign with the Plymouth Whalers and you can add Alex Aleardi to that list. The 5'9 165lbs center has signed with the Kitchener Rangers who won the OHL Championship. He was drafted in the third round of the OHL Draft this past May.

The Kitchener Rangers website said he had 35 goals for 109 points in 72 games. During MWEHL play he had 13 goals and 29 assisits in 30 contests.

He didn't make a college commitment. What makes me so surprised is most these players are uncommitted when signing with the OHL. The three big ones in John Carlson, Austin Watson and Jared Knight still had commitments. Levi, Aleardi, Barron Smith, and Beau Schmitz all were uncommitted. Schmitz did have a commitment with Ferris State but he formally decommitted a while back. Could "The Best of Both Worlds" campaign working for the OHL? The USHL released this video to gain more exposure to potential players. The OHL and the USHL are battling with each other.

Could this signing lead to a bigger signing for the Rangers? Could Jeremy Morin be on his way to Kitchener? He's a 2007 draft pick of the Rangers and was rumored to come to Kitchener at last year's trade deadline. He's one of the few players on the USA NTDP U-18 team yet to make a college descision. He's also a top 15 pick for the NHL Draft.

The Kitchener Rangers still have Jeff Skinner who was their 1st round selection in 2008 still unsigned. I think that won't be too much of a hassle to get him to sign. Just a tidbit but their 15th round selection this year was David Bondra, the son of former NHLer Peter Bondra.

Northeastern Gets a Commitment from Anders Franzon

The Northeastern Huskies of Hockey East got a commitment from defenseman Anders Franzon yesterday for the 2009-2010 season. He played with Västerås of the SuperElit League. He had a goal and six assists last year.

Before heading to Northeastern, he will play for the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League next season. The Nanaimo Daily News did a story on him in May which I find interesting.

He not Swedish but its a trend for NCAA schools to look for talent over seas. Maine has three Swedish players coming in this season. St. Cloud State tried to get Swiss forward Luca Cunti to play last year but he was ruled ineligible. He's Tampa's 3rd round pick in 2007. Carl Hagelin who's also from Sweden plays for Michigan.

In other BCHL news, former Victoria Grizzlies' forward Jamie Benn has signed with the Dallas Stars. He played with the Kelowna Rockets last season where he had 33 goals and 32 assists in 51 games. Benn will be back with the Rockets next season.

News and Notes

The biggest news of the day in Junior Hockey was the Anaheim Ducks signing their 2007 1st round pick Logan MacMillan. He was the 19th overall selection and is currently with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. Last season it was a struggle for MacMillan who battled with injuries throughout the season. He ended up with 15 goals and 26 assists in 46 contests. Two years ago, he had 20 goals and 35 assists in 68 games.

The Lewiston Maineiacs have hired Jon Goyens to become an assistant coach.

NHL.com has a couple of pieces of interest. Here's a piece on former Wisconsin Badger Kyle Turris, another on two former QMJHLers that are Washington picks, Nashville prospect Jon Blum, and the Saponari brothers.

Nathan White of the Telegraph-Journal has a story on the Ted Nolan firing. You can read my reactions here.

The Ottawa 67's Fan Blog has a quick blurb on players at NHL camps.

Jeff Bromley has a story on the Kootenay Ice and their arena lease with the city.

Brad Elliot Schlossman
has a Q & A session with Nick Mattson of the National Team Development Program Under 18 team.

The World Under 18 Tournament has released the schedule for next April's event in Fargo-Moorhead.

Plymouth Still Adding Talent

The Plymouth Whalers announced today that they have signed their sixth round selection in Austin Levi. He's a 6'3 190lbs defenseman. Why does a sixth round selection get this type of attention? He's from Farmington Hills, Michigan. So it was a question if he would report with colleges recruiting him.

This is the third player from the Compuware Under-16 team that made the jump to the OHL. Austin Watson and Jared Knight already have signed to come over the border. Levi had a goal and seven assists in 27 games. At the Select 16's in Rochester, New York a few years weeks ago he had no points in five contests. Compuware plays in the same building as the Whalers do.

He hadn't committed anywhere but I am sure he was on USA Hockey's radar for the National Team Development Program.

The summer might not be done for the Plymouth Whalers. They are still waiting if they can sign Carolina's and their second round pick Zac Dalpe. Unlike most players that were drafted as 16 year olds in the OHL Draft. Dalpe is 18. The Hurricanes and the Whalers are owned by the same owner. They could also make a push to sign another young defenseman in Jon Merrill. He's committed to the NTDP and Michigan in 2010.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kitchener Rangers have announced that Paul Fixter a former Hershey Bear coach as an assistant coach and GM.

The Regina Pats of the WHL are looking for a new head coach. Curtis Hunt will join the Ottawa Senators coaching staff.
