CHL Boston Pizza Player of the Week

The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Mathew Sisca of the Niagara IceDogs is the Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 16 after scoring five goals and two assists in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-2. The IceDogs had a record of 2-0-1-0 on the week.

On Thursday night Sisca was named the second star of the game in a 2-0 win at home over the Owen Sound Attack. Sisca would assist on the first goal and score the insurance marker late in the third period. On Friday night in Kitchener Sisca scored one goal as the IceDogs lost the overtime decision to the Rangers 4-3. Sisca and the IceDogs would rebound Saturday night with a 6-2 win in Peterborough over the Petes. Sisca was the first star of the game for netting his first OHL career hat-trick and adding one assist.

Sisca, an 18-year-old from Woodbridge, ON is in his second season with the IceDogs. He currently leads the club in scoring with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 23 games which more than doubles his point production from his rookie season. Sisca is eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Andy Smith of the Chilliwack Bruins was the WHL nominee after picking up seven points, scoring four goals and three assists to go with a plus-4 plus-minus rating helping the Bruins post a 2-0-1-0 record. The QMJHL nominee was Yannick Riendeau. Riendeau who was named the CHL Player of the Week on November 11 and was close to being honoured for the second week in a row after collecting three goals, including a game-winner and adding four helpers leading the Drummondville Voltigeurs to three wins.

ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen is the ADT CHL Goaltender of the week for the week ending November 16.

Jones was near perfect this past week with the Calgary Hitmen as the native of North Vancouver, British Columbia posted a 3-0-0-0 record this past week, allowing just three goals on 66 shots for a 1.000 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage. Jones started his week on Tuesday with a first star performance earning the 2-1 victory with 23 saves to beat the Swift Current Broncos. Jones was named the third star of the game Friday night when his 22 saves helped the Hitmen win a tight 2-1 decision over the Brandon Wheat Kings. Jones finished his week Saturday making 18 saves in the 6-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Jones is in his third season with the Calgary Hitmen. After going unselected at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Jones was offered a free agent try-out with the Los Angeles Kings later in the summer. Following a great rookie camp and tremendous main camp the Kings decided to sign Jones to a three year entry level NHL contract.

Mike Murphy from the Belleville Bulls was the Ontario Hockey League nominee after going 2-0-0-1 with a 1.58 goals against average and a .955 save percentage. Murphy will represent Team OHL at the 2008 ADT Canada Russia Challenge. Antoine Tardif of the Drummondville Voltigeurs was the QMJHL nominee after going 3-0-0-0 last week and posting a goals-against-average of 2.00 while defeating the Lewiston MAINEiacs, Moncton Wildcats, and Victoriaville Tigres.

CHL Mosaik MasterCard Top 10 Rankings

TORONTO, Wednesday, November 19, 2008 – The Canadian Hockey League today announced its most recent CHL Mosaik MasterCard Top 10 rankings for the 2008-09 season. Four Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams managed to crack the upper echelon of the CHL: The Shawinigan Cataractes, the Moncton Wildcats, the Quebec Remparts and the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The weekly rankings of the Canadian Hockey League's top 10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

Wow. Good for Jones; he's had a few iffy games when he hasn't seen many shots, but he's been really solid this year, and more reliable than Spence was before him (though I respect the Hitmen for keeping Spence long enough for him to get the franchise record at the start of the year).
