Escott Joins PEI

This makes me scratch my head:

Charlottetown November, 19, 2008

17 year old 6’02” 155 lbs, Jordon Escott, a 6th Round Draft Pick by the PEI Rocket in the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft, will be in the line up this Friday as the Rocket take on the Val-d’Or Foreurs, at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, game time is 7pm.

Escott from St. John’s NFLD, is a power forward who has been playing with the Amherst Ramblers of the MJAHL and tallied 24 points in just 19 games. Escott in his rookie year with the Ramblers, totaled 41 points in 52 games.

Jordon represented team Canada as he competed in the 2008 World Junior A Challenge, where he took home a bronze medal.

This is the same Jordan Escott that committed to Cornell about a month ago. I don't usually criticize kids for changing their mind because it's common practice but this is so obvious he used Cornell. On the other hand why did he make a commitment in October then suddenly decide to sign with the Prince Edward Island Rocket?

It just seems that Escott used Cornell as a bargaining chip to get PEI to drive up their offer. I like this comment in today's Chronicle Herald:

"It was a very hard decision," said the St. John’s, Nfld. native, who is NHL draft eligible in 2010. "Obviously if you can get a degree from Cornell University, you would be set for life, no matter what. It was tough to turn down.

Another standard comment that was written by his agent. You don't care about the degree from Cornell but rather you care about the monetary value of the scholarships you would have had received (I say that because I believe Cornell is an Ivy League school which don't give out atheltic scholarships.).

His coach withe Amherst Ramblers was shocked about the signing.

"I’m not sold on the whole situation but it’s a family decision," Crocker said.

"Obviously you hate to lose a player like Jordan but our focus now is the 22 guys in the dressing room. It’ll open the door up for someone else to play. We’re looking to turn something positive out of this. It’s a loss but it’s not the end of the world."

I love the first quote because I take it that the coach has had some thoughts that Escott used Cornell. He also is trying to keep a positive outlook for his team which is good.

That's My Take
