Two Big Trades

Yesterday the London Knights landed Trevor Cann who was previously with the Peterborough Petes. Peterborough receives Sergei Korostin, 17-year-old defence Barron Smith and a second-round draft pick in 2010.

This deal works out for both teams. The Knights receive a bonafide number one goalie in the OHL. The Petes get a great forward in Korostin. The stats aren't there for him. He has 2 goals and 5 assists. He goes to a place where he will be a go to guy. Smith is a young defenseman but like Korostin, he was buried on the depth charts with the recent addition of Kevin Montgomery. He just returned from the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters. The Petes get a high pick. A second round pick to the Knights is like a 10th round selection. They will take chances in any round.

The Windsor Spitfires have counter attacked with a surprising move. They have acquired goaltender Brandon Maxwell from the Erie Otters. Maxwell was a 2nd round selection in 2007 but decided to go to the National Team Development Program. He also has made a commitment to Boston College for next season. The Otters will receive forward Andrew Yogan and a second round selection in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. Yogan has five goals and three assists in 16 games this season with the Spitfires

I talked to someone earlier this week close to the Spitfires organization and said there were no trade rumors to speak of. Of course things could of changed since Tuesday. This deal leads me to believe Maxwell is heading to Windsor. Windsor wouldn't of have sent a 17-year-old and a second round selection for a player that wasn't going to report. By all account its a done deal.

Another reason Maxwell will bolt across the border is because the current goalie situation at Chestnut Hill. John Muse was a present surprise last year for the Boston College Eagles as a freshman. He led them to a National Championship. I don't think Maxwell wants to sit for two years before taking over the goaltending duties at BC. I can't see Jerry York giving both goalies equal playing time. Can anyone name Cory Schneider's back-up?

That's My Take

Cann is a good fit in London and looked real smooth last night handling the puck. Guy lacked that composure so Hunter dealt.

Maxwell is reporting from what hear but do you run a team into a Championship season with an unproven OA starter in Engelage and a 17 year old backup with no major junior experience.

Seems strange at best unless Maxwell gets flipped. I not sure Engelage ( contrary to Spits fans ) will even be there after the deadline. Taking up an OA spot kind of seems strange too. We'll see what happens but do expect more moves with this deal.

Hey MNIAC, what's happening with the Mem Cup host. Are they as good as the other group ahead of them in the Q. Quebec, Moncton, Shawinigan all look formidable and trouble for the Oceanic. Will the league just force everyone to stack the host team.

Clem Jodoin likes to run a defensive system in Rimouski. That could be apart of the problem. Most of their core guys are 18 year olds. Some say they are still a year away from being a force.
