Is Cornell Playing with Fire?

Over the weekend, Cornell University received a commitment from John Esposito for the 2010 season, yes Angelo's brother. When I read that he made a commitment to Cornell it made me scratch my head. Recruiting can be a long process but why is Cornell willing to accept another player that might jump ship to the QMJHL?

Two weeks ago, they lost Jordan Escott to the Prince Edward Island Rocket a month after he committed to Cornell. Esposito was a fifth round draft pick of the Victoriaville Tigres in 2007.

Angelo was going the NCAA route before his QMJHL Draft year until he was taken by Patrick Roy. I wander if the coaching staff at Cornell has that in the back of their mind when receiving a commitment from the younger Esposito. Angelo never made conmmitment but he was heavily recruited by Hockey East schools. The most talked about for Angelo's services were Boston University and New Hampshire.

John might not have the skill set like his brother but he has played solid for the Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL. He has 12 goals and 12 assists in 27 games

That's My Take

I'm not as worried about Esposito, he seems pretty committed to the NCAA route. He's also coming in '09 (not 2010), there isn't the same wait in junior hockey that Jordan Escott had.

My concern is about Mathieu Brisson, a Quebec defenseman that Cornell has a commitment from for 2010. He's a very high draft pick of PEI, who just poached away Jordan Escott. Conventional wisdom was that Brisson was much more likely to play in the Q than Escott.
