Day 3 of the OHL Cup

Round-robin action at the 2009 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament continued at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on Friday with an eight game schedule.

Game 34: 2:45 pm Vaughan Kings 1 (1-3-0) vs. Elgin Middlesex Chiefs 6 (4-0-0)

Three goals in three minutes late in the first period set the tone and let the Chiefs cruise to the win and a perfect round-robin record. Boone Jenner opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the tournament, later adding two assists to give him eight points as the leading scorer after day three. Bryan McCauley and Ryan Wells each had two points for the Chiefs. The team stayed disciplined despite many second and third period penalties against the Kings who could not find a good rhythm all game. They netted one third period goal off the stick of forward Michael Vallescuro with Christian Elsborg and Ryan Sproul drawing assists.

Game 33: 2:15 pm Toronto Jr. Canadiens 1 (2-2-0) vs. London Jr. Knights 3 (1-2-1)

Even despite previous elimination from playoff contention, the Knights played as if on a mission to show they can compete with the best. Defenceman Matthew Fuller scored first on a set up by Scott Lombardi and Matthew Wildman, who had a three-point game. His shorthanded goal in the second period held as the game-winner. Cameron Brace had the lone goal for the Jr. Canadiens who appeared caught off guard by the energy of the Knights. The Canadiens pulled their goalie with the man advantage in the final minutes and produced some chances but Jacob Riley stood strong for the win, his first of the tournament.

Game 32: 1:00 pm York Simcoe Express 9 (3-0-0) vs. Barrie Colts 1 (0-3-1)

The Express opened the flood gates offensively getting goals from five different contributors including a hat-trick from Jeffery DiNallo to stay undefeated heading into the weekend. The offence scored in bunches and was relentless when they struck for three in a matter of two minutes midway through the first period, continuously peppering shots on the Barrie goal. Steven Janes and Barclay Goodrow set eachother up for the first two goals. Goodrow ended the game with four points. The Colts managed to sneak one past Hayden Neuman when Josh Leivo scored shorthanded late in the third period.

Game 31: 12:30 pm Ottawa Senators 0 (1-3-0) vs. Burlington Eagles 4 (1-2-0)

The Eagles found their offensive punch and were able to grab their first victory of the tournament. Jake Daly shut the door in goal, keeping their playoff hopes alive for Saturday. Jeremy Gottzmann provided half the scoring including a shorthanded goal late in the first period. Both of his goals were set up by linemate Danny Lomas who had two assists in the game. Ryan Wilkinson scored a power play goal in the second and Andrew Bontempo had a late third period goal to round out the scoring.

Game 30: 11:15 am Eastern Ontario Wild 2 (1-2-0) vs. Toronto Marlboros 3 OT (3-0-1)

The Eastern Ontario Wild have a flare for the dramatics but came up on the short side for the second time in OT this event nearly fending off the powerful Marlies. Eric Ming put the Wild ahead in the second period and Sebastian Gratton was tremendous in goal withstanding countless pressure from the Marlies attackers. "We are happy with the way we played today and their goalie (Gratton) was very good, he played a great game" said the overtime hero Steven Strong. "We brought the puck deep into their end and I got a great back-door pass from Strome (Ryan) and put it in. We are really rolling right now, everything is positive" added Strong. Ryan Strome and Lucas Lessio each had two points for the Marlies as they complete the round-robin undefeated with 7 points.

Game 29: 10:45 am Quinte Red Devils 3 (3-0-0) vs. TPH Thunder 2 OT (1-2-0)

The Quinte Red Devils found themselves in unfamiliar territory this tournament when they were trailing 2-0 miday through the first period to TPH. Thunder forwards Tyler Rehm and Corey Hucker found the back of the net in the first and second period respectively and were solid defensively led by Jay Williams in the crease. The Devils mounted a comeback led by Steven Broek with his fourth goal of the tournament, set up by Zach Hall and Nick Cousins who is among the tournament leaders in points scored with seven. The game was chippy down the home stretch as the teams each traded aggressive penalties before the extra frame. It didn't take long for Zach Hall to complete the comeback, scoring just over a minute into overtime to keep the Devils perfect in round-robin play.

Game 28: 9:30 am Thunder Bay 3 (0-3-0) vs. Mississauga Reps 5 (2-2-0)

The Reps are the first team to complete round-robin action and ended in the win column on the strength of two goals by Tyler Graovac and a game-winning shorthanded marker by Wes Deme in the second period. Thunder Bay came back strong in the third trailing 4-1 with a pair of power play goals during a stretch that saw seven straight Reps players parade to the penalty box. Adam Fares scored the first one for the Kings just inside the first minute followed later by a Taylor Santorelli mark. Graovac put things away with an insurance goal midway through the period to keep the Reps on top.

Game 27: 9:00 am Rochester 4 (2-1-0) vs. GNML Wolves 2 (1-1-1)

A see-saw battle from start to finish where Rochester had an answer to every Wolves goal throughout the game. Mitchell McCrank got the northern boys on the board first only to have the game neutralized by Rochester forward J.T Stenglien. Less than a minute later the Wolves regained the lead on a Catlin Cargill goal before Cory Gurski replied for Rochester. Rochester overcame tremendous adversity in the third period when the team was shorthanded for seven straight minutes. "I was amazed (at the length of the power play)" said Rochester goalie TJ Noce. "It was a great effort from us today, especially after the loss yesterday. We kept our focus and our team effort was better today. This tournament is the cream of the crop, there are no easy games" added Noce. The team killed the penalty, in fact Timmy Uhteg scored the game-winner for Rochester while the team was shorthanded.
