Engelage sets the record

The Windsor Spitfires have been dominate all season long but most fans believe their weak spot is goaltending. They tried to bring Brandon Maxwell in after trading for his rights in November. After USA Hockey blocked Maxwell from joining Windsor, they traded Maxwell to Kitchener for Josh Unice. The team thought they needed a second goaltender to split time with Andrew Engelage. Through all this he still manages to break the OHL record with most wins in a season with astonishing 46.

"It was pretty exciting, especially with the home fans cheering," Engelage told Jim Parker of the Windsor Star. "I wanted to get it out of the way. I owe a lot to my parents and to (Spits goalie coach) Bill Dark, who stuck with me for three years and was always behind me," said Engelage.

If the Spitfires wanted an elite goaltender in the league, why didn't they get Thomas McCollum? I am sure there were duccussions and believe there were rumors. All I remember reading was Windsor was in duccussions with Oshawa for John Tavares.

Maybe it was McCollum's performance at the World Junior Championships that scared Windsor off. Everyone was down on him but who's else is in the league for goaltenders? Trevor Cann but he was traded to London or Jaroslav Janus in Erie.

I think they will do fine with Engelage in net. They have enough offense and defense to compensate. They just need to find someone for the future and that could be Jack Campbell?

That's My Take

This is going to hurt some college hockey supporter's feelings....College aren't losing the war for the top talent...They already lost. It's not cyclical either. It's over. The CHL figured it out and started offering American and Canadian guys full ride deals to any college, university or tech school that will admit them worldwide. Full deals. Everything paid. Books, room, tuition and a little extra for the top flight guys (a little :)). Because the top American kids/students didn't want anything to do with CIS schools after junior, they had to make it like the US GI Bill/College fund for vets. Smart and effective. This was the only way to compete against American colleges.A kid can focus on hockey and go to high school/college while they are playing as well. When and if that hockey dream dies it's time to hit the books. Give me the stats on the guys who don't go to school after junior and I'll show you a kid who wasn't serious about school in the first place. "Rocks for Jocks" in the NCAA right? Wow, kinesiology from St. Cloud State. That collosal waste of time WON"T get you a job anywhere except uh...hmn.. It used to be the colleges got the late bloomers but now they aren't getting much if any of the top end talent. Hopefully, I will get flamed so I can post the almost endless list of guys who realized the colleges were lying about the CHL's education package. The most corrupt institution outside of Wall Street is the NCAA anyway. The only reason most top end guys even "commit" at 15 to a college is to extract a little extra education money from the CHL team they have cooked a deal with :). Thanks for this Blog Nathan!
