Kelowna one game away

Press Release

Mark Guggenberger turned aside all 21 shots he faced to post his third shutout of the post-season as the Kelowna Rockets skated to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen in Game 3 of the 2009 WHL Championship series on Monday, May 4th, in Kelowna, B.C.

The win gives the Rockets a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series over the Hitmen, and leaves them one victory away from capturing the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Ryley Grantham’s fourth goal of the post-season 15:15 into the first period was the game-winner while Cody Almond sealed the win with a late empty-net tally for the Rockets, who held the Hitmen to just 11 shots on net through the first two periods.

Martin Jones turned aside 22 of 23 shots he faced in a losing cause for the Hitmen, whose WHL-leading offense has managed to produce just three goals in the series while going 0-for-10 on the power play through three games.

The Rockets now have the opportunity to complete the series sweep on home ice as they’ll host the Hitmen for Game 4 on Wednesday night.
