Rockets stun Hitmen

Press Release

Jamie Benn scored twice and added an assist and Tyler Myers notched the game-winner and chipped in two assists to lead the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Hitmen in Game 1 of the 2009 WHL Championship series on Friday, May 1st.

Mark Guggenberger turned in a 28-save performance as the Rockets’ penalty killing unit killed off four Hitmen power plays and scored the shorthanded empty-net goal late in the third period. The Rockets also converted two of three power play chances in the game.

Paul Postma scored the only goal for the Hitmen, who outshot the visitors 29-21 in the contest. The loss snaps the Hitmen’s 12-game post-season winning streak, and also marks the first home-ice defeat since the Rockets handed the Hitmen a 2-1 loss in late February.

The Hitmen will host the Rockets for Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Saturday night in Calgary, AB.

Kelowna leads best-of-seven series 1-0.
