Staying Alive

Brett Sonne scored twice and added two assists for a four-point effort as the visiting Calgary Hitmen doused the Kelowna Rockets 6-2 in Game 4 of the 2009 WHL Championship Series on Wednesday, May 6th, in Kelowna, B.C.

The win keeps the Hitmen alive in the best-of-seven series, which they now trail three games to one.

Brandon Kozun – with a goal and an assist – Alex Plante, Bostjan Golicic and Carson McMillan also scored for the Hitmen, who converted three of four power play chances in the contest after being shut out in the previous 10 opportunities. Joel Broda, Michael Stone and Keith Seabrook all chipped in two assists for the Hitmen, who had only scored three goals in the first three games of the series.

Mikael Backlund scored twice – his 12th and 13th of the post-season – for the Rockets, who held a 2-1 lead at the midway point of the second period but surrendered five unanswered goals in the loss.

Martin Jones turned in a 35- save effort for the Hitmen, earning his 13th post-season victory. Mark Guggenberger made 29 saves in the loss.

The series now heads back to Calgary for Game 5 on Thursday night.

Kelowna leads best-of-seven series 3-1.
