he USHL today announced the weekly award winners for the opening week of the 2009-10 USHL regular season.
Congratulations to Andrei Kuchin of the Chicago Steel, named Reebok Offensive Player of the Week; David Makowski of the Green Bay Gamblers, selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week; and Jeff Teglia of the Omaha Lancers, who earned honors as the USHL Goaltender of the Week.
Kuchin registered six points (1g, 5a) and a plus-six rating in Chicago’s two victories during the weekend over Team USA, welcoming the NTDP into the USHL. In Friday’s 5-1 victory, Kuchin collected assists on the first two goals of the game. On Saturday, the 18-year-old forward scored the first goal of the game and assisted on three other goals for a four-point night in the 10-5 victory for the Steel. Kuchin, a native of Elektrougli, Russia, is playing in his first USHL season.
Makowski scored three points (2g, 1a) in the season opener at Green Bay, as the team raised their 2008-09 Anderson Cup banner but lost 5-4 to the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday. The veteran Gamblers defenseman fired a game high seven shots on a goal and scored all three of his points on the power play. A 20-year-old native of Wildwood, Missouri, Makowski is playing in his second season for the Gamblers. He is committed to Denver University following his USHL career.
Teglia made 25 saves and earned the victory in the season opener for the Omaha Lancers on Saturday, as the team returned to Nebraska soil - and the Civic Auditorium in downtown Omaha – for a home opener that saw them defeat the Tri-City Storm 3-1 in front of the largest opening night crowd of the weekend (4,399). Teglia is in his second season with the Lancers. The 18-year-old native of Bloomingdale, Illinois was the recipient of the USHL Scholar-Athlete Award following the 2008-09 season.
