OHL Academic Players of the Month

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for November.

West Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the West Division is defenseman Nathan Chiarlitti of the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club. Chiarlitti, 17, a native of Maple, Ontario currently is a Grade 12 student at Northern Collegiate in Sarnia. “Nathan is enrolled in an academically challenging program and is maintaining an 85% average in three university level preparation courses. He is an excellent example of an OHL Player who balances playing hockey with success in school. He is involved in activities with our community making him an excellent ambassador for the OHL,” commented Sting Academic Advisor Caroline White. Nathan is eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Midwest Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the Midwest Division is centre Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers. Skinner, 17, a native of Markham, Ontario currently is a Grade 12 student at Eastwood Collegiate Institute in Kitchener. “Jeff continues to make a significant impact both in the classroom and on the ice. He has excellent marks in his various university level, grade 12 courses will allow him to pursue a post-secondary education at any school of his choosing,” commented Dave Tennant, Academic Advisor for the Rangers. Jeff was a member of Team Canada’s Under-18 this past summer and is expected to be a first round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Central Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the Central Division is centre Freddie Hamilton of the Niagara IceDogs. Hamilton, 17, a native of Toronto, Ontario is a Grade 12 student at Governor Simcoe Secondary School in St. Catharines. IceDogs Academic Advisor Tim Tope had this to say about Freddie, “Freddie was the 2008-09 winner of the Ivan Tennant Award as the top high school student in the Ontario Hockey League. He also earned top honours at Governor Simcoe Secondary School as their top Grade 11 student. This year, Freddie continues to impress. He currently holds at 98.2% average in his Grade 12 University level courses and is a leader in all facets of school life.”

East Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for November in the East Division is goaltender Michael Zador of the Oshawa Generals. Zador, 18, a native of Toronto, Ontario, is currently attending Henry Street High School in Whitby. “Michael currently carries an 89% average while taking 3 university prep level courses. He plans to work toward an engineering degree at university next year,” commented Tom Buchanan, Academic Advisor for the Generals. Zador was a 5th round selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
