Despite nine goals allowed in two games early in the week, Watson rebounded nicely to steal the series back for the Kings. Playing on three straight nights -- all must-win games down 3-1 in the Coastal Conference Finals -- he stifled top-seeded Alberni Valley Bulldogs with a 0.66 goals-against average in the final three contests, two of which were on the road. In the all-important Game 7 showdown, Watson was named the first star after a 41-save shutout performance.

In all, the Lititz, Pennsylvania native turned aside 101 of the 103 shots that the Bulldogs threw his way during that three-day span. He finished the week with a 3-2 mark, but it was his tremendous poise under pressure that helped Powell River pull off the comeback and earned him the weekly BCHL honours.

It’s the second week in a row a goaltender’s name has been called. A week after Vernon’s Graeme Gordon earned the honours for his stellar play in net, Watson followed it up with an equally impressive effort this week for the Kings. Now the two will battle each other for BCHL supremacy when Vernon and Powell River face off for the second straight year in the Fred Page Cup Finals.

USHL Honors - Week 26

Press Release

The United States Hockey League today announced the weekly award winners for the 26th week of the 2009-10 USHL regular season.

Congratulations to forward Tyler Barnes of the Waterloo Black Hawks, named Reebok Offensive Player of the Week; defenseman Danny Wurden of the Sioux City Musketeers, selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week; and Willie Yanakeff of the Waterloo Black Hawks who earned honors as the USHL Goaltender of the Week.

Barnes scored five points (4g, 1a) as the Black Hawks won two of three games during the week to qualify for the postseason. He tallied two goals (1 shorthanded, 1 power play) in a span of 1:30 during the second period of the 5-3 loss to Sioux Falls on Wednesday. The Eagan, Minnesota native recorded his second consecutive multi-goal game when he netted two power play goals in the 4-0 victory over Des Moines on Friday. Barnes completed his week assisting on the game-winning goal in the 4-0 shutout against Cedar Rapids on Saturday. The 20-year-old is third on his team in scoring with 66 points (34g, 32a) while playing in all 58 games this season. He currently ranks second in the USHL in both goals (34) and power play goals (14).

Wurden registered three points (3a) and a plus-three rating as the Musketeers won two of three games during the week to pull within one point of the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. He assisted on the first goal of the game in the 2-1 win against Tri-City on Tuesday. The 20-year-old then assisted on the game-winning goal during Friday's 2-1 victory over Chicago. Wurden made it three straight games with a point when he dished out an assist during the 2-1 loss to Omaha on Saturday. The Fargo, North Dakota native is playing in his fourth USHL season in Sioux City. He has registered 20 points (4g, 16a) in 55 games this season, notching career highs in goals, assists, and points.

Yanakeff posted back-to-back shutouts to help the Black Hawks clinch a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season. He made the start in all three games during the week earning a 1.34 goals-against-average and a .949 save percentage. The Jerome, Michigan native turned away all 23 shots he faced in the 4-0 win vs. Des Moines on Friday to record his first career USHL shutout. Yanakeff followed up with a 33-save shutout in the 4-0 victory over Cedar Rapids on Saturday to post his 10th victory of the season. The 17-year-old is playing in his first USHL season and has compiled a 10-8-0 record in 21 appearances split between Waterloo and Sioux City.

Kings' Shamanski named MJHL Player of Year

Press Release

Steven Shamanski’s dream season continues after being named the MJHL’s selection for the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s player of the year award. It’s the latest of several awards which have been bestowed upon the veteran Dauphin Kings’ defenceman.

“Steven is not only an excellent hockey player, but he’s also very involved in his community,” said MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis. “He’s a very worthy selection and will represent our league with class.”

The MJHL’s 11 teams each submitted a nominee, with the final voting conducted by the coaches. Recently, Shamanski was presented with the MJHL’s Brian Kozak Trophy, awarded to the league’s top defenceman. He was also a finalist for the MJHL’s most valuable player award.

Shamanski, who is captain of the Kings, won’t have much time to enjoy his latest honour as the Kings take on Winnipeg Saints for the Turnbull Trophy, awarded to the MJHL champion. Game 1 of their best-of-seven series goes Saturday night in Winnipeg’s Civic Centre.

Shamanski, 20, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of another MJHL star - Eric Delong of the Portage Terriers, who won this prestigious award last season. The previous MJHL star to win this award was Junior Lessard of Portage Terriers in 2000.

The CJHL Player of the Year Award is awarded annually to a Junior A hockey player for both his on-ice achievements and off-ice contributions to his community. Shamanski volunteers his time with Grade 4 students at Lt. Col Barker School.

A graduate of Carberry Collegiate, he was an honour roll student and aspires to enroll in university to study general sciences and math. His ultimate goal is to be a pharmacist.

“I would like to become a pharmacist and work at either rural hospitals or operate his own pharmacy in Carberry,” Shamanski said.

2010 Fred Page Cup Preview: Vipers and Kings set to battle once again

Press Release

One year ago, a pair of opposites were brought together to battle for the Fred Page Cup. In one corner, the Vernon Vipers looked to continue the franchise's proud tradition with their ninth appearance in the BCHL's Championship series since 1996. In the other, the Powell River Kings hit the big stage for the first time since 1995 and with zero league titles under their belt.

The six-game encounter proved closer than the teams' respective histories may have suggested, as the Vipers hoisted the trophy despite being outscored 10-8 in the final four games of the series. And as it turned out, the Kings were the last team to beat the soon-to-be RBC Cup champs, who posted 11 consecutive victories to close out the season.

Cue the rematch. 12 months after facing off in April of 2009, the Vipers and Kings are back to do battle once again. And while many of the players on both benches remain the same, there are no shortage of new faces that should alter the dynamics of the 2010 Fred Page Cup Finals.

Gone from the Kings' line-up are the high-scoring trio of Darcy Oakes, Kyle Bodie and Clay Harvey, who finished 1-2-3 in postseason scoring last year with 66 points amongst them. Filling their shoes are midseason pick-up Daniel Carr and Ontario import Matt Garbowsky, who along with captain Mat Bodie have combined 30 goals and 40 assists through three playoff rounds.

In net, Josh Watson has ably replaced the departed Carson Chubak. The 19-year old compiled a 12-4 record in the Coastal bracket while posting a goals-against average of 1.94 and a .921 save-percentage. Most impressively, with his team down three games to one against Alberni Valley in the Conference Finals, Watson allowed just two goals on 103 shots in a trio of wins that closed out a seven-game series win.

On the blueline, the Kings boast one of the league's deepest and most offensively gifted groups. Led by Bodie's 64 combined regular season and playoff points, complimented by the poise and experience of Reid Campbell, Jason Yee and Darcy Huisman, and topped off by the size and formidable shot of Justin Dasilva, Powell River is rarely at a disadvantage on defence.

Meanwhile, there are few holes to be poked in the line-up of a Vernon Vipers squad that lost just six times in regulation during a 60-game regular season. The defending champs are deep up front, where twins Connor and Kellen Jones set the tone with a relentless forecheck and excellent cycling abilities. RBC Cup veterans Braden Pimm, Mike Collins, Jonathan Milhouse and Cory Kane are amongst the team's secondary scoring threats, as the foursome's 252 combined regular season points demonstrates.

Defensively, the Vipers rely on a group that includes team captain Kevin Kraus, New Jersey Devils draft pick Curtis Gedig, and Ivy League commits Dan Nycholat and Adam Thompson. Nycholat has continued to post impressive offensive numbers in the playoffs following a 45-point campaign in his first BCHL season.

Graeme Gordon has given the Vipers just the type of steady goaltending they had hoped for when he replaced graduating starter Andrew Hammond this season. Both Gordon and rookie back-up Blake Voth posted fine regular season numbers, but Gordon has taken his game up a notch in 10 postseason appearances. In those starts, the 20-year old has picked up seven wins while allowing just 16 goals. His .940 save-percentage through three rounds leads all BCHL netminders by a sizable margin.

The clubs met twice during the 2009/10 regular season, with the Vipers winning at home and taking the head-to-head series after gaining a point in an overtime loss on the Sunshine Coast. With both of those meetings having taken place in the final month of the regular season (January 29th and February 4th), there should be some memories fresh in the minds of both clubs.

Green Bay Gamblers Win Anderson Cup

Press Release

The Green Bay Gamblers clinched their second straight Anderson Cup title as USHL regular season champions after a 4-3 shootout win over Fargo on Saturday night.

Forward Ludwig Karlsson scored in regulation and had the only goal in the five-round shootout while goaltender Ryan McKay stopped all five Fargo attempts to earn the victory for the Gamblers.

It is the fourth Anderson Cup title in team history and second time they have won the title in back-to-back seasons (1995-97). The last USHL team to win the regular season championship in consecutive seasons was the Lincoln Stars (1999-2001).

The Gamblers have a 43-10-5 record with two regular season games remaining and have already set a team record for wins, which is the most in the USHL since the Omaha Lancers won 43 games during their Anderson Cup title in 2007-08.

The victory also guarantees the Gamblers the first overall seed and home-ice advantage throughout the 2010 Clark Cup Playoffs.

NAHL welcomes New Mexico team for 2010-11

Press Release

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that its Board of Governors has accepted the membership application for an expansion team in New Mexico.

The club will begin play next season and play its home games out of the 6,000-seat Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome New Mexico to the North American Hockey League family as we continue to strengthen our footprint in the Southwest,” said NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld. “With a dedicated ownership group committed to the growth and development of our student-athletes, coupled with strong support from the local community and a first-class facility, all the pieces are in place for success, both on and off the ice.”

The team is owned by Ken Dennis, a Southern California resident who worked in the entertainment industry for over 30 years with Universal Studios, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox as a television producer for hit shows such as “Family Guy,” “The X-Files,” “Millennium” and “Space: Above and Beyond.”

“The North American Hockey League is a great place for young men to develop as they make the transition from Midgets and Bantams to college hockey,” said Dennis, who has coached ice and inline hockey at the youth levels. “The ability to help these athletes mature and develop and become college hockey players - and, for some, the desire to play in the professional ranks - is something we should all aspire to do.”

The team has hired Bill Muckalt as its first head coach. Muckalt is an eight-year NHL veteran who played for the Ottawa Senators, Minnesota Wild, New York Islanders and Vancouver Canucks. He’s also a two-time NCAA Division I champion, having won titles with the University of Michigan (CCHA) in 1996 and 1998.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to be an integral part of building a quality program and putting a quality product on the ice that our fans can enjoy,” said Muckalt, who served as head coach of the Western States Hockey League’s (WSHL) Valencia (Calif.) Flyers this season. “I’m also excited about working for Ken Dennis because his commitment as an owner and his goals for this program are top-notch.”

“Bill will be a huge asset to our program,” said Dennis. “As a player, he’s a guy who’s made it and had success at both the college and professional levels and he’ll do everything in his power to make the team successful for our fans.”

The Santa Ana Star Center, a $47 million facility, leads the field among venues in New Mexico when it comes to hosting concerts, sporting events, conferences and cultural programs. It boasts 500 club seats and 26 private luxury suites.

“This is an exciting day for the Santa Ana Star Center and the city of Rio Rancho,” said Global Spectrum’s Gunnar Fox, general manager at the Santa Ana Star Center. “Hockey is back at the Santa Ana Star Center with a team from the NAHL that will provide fans with exciting family entertainment coupled with world-class hockey.”

“Rio Rancho is a great market,” Dennis added. “Bringing junior hockey to town is something the citizens of New Mexico will appreciate and support.”

No stranger to the NAHL having followed the league while living in Michigan two years ago, Muckalt is sold on everything the 25-team circuit has to offer in terms of development and exposure for its players.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for student-athletes who are trying to reach their goals of playing college hockey and I’m excited to help these kids realize their dreams, develop them and promote them,” he said. “That’s the primary goal of our organization, to help guide these young men and promote them to the next level.”

A successful product of the NCAA system, Muckalt, who played four years with the Wolverines, is also bullish on the U.S. college route.

“I’m a big believer in college hockey and I’m a big believer in post-secondary education,” he said. “It’s a steppingstone for these kids to do well in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community and that’s what NCAA programs are looking for.”

This marks the NAHL’s second venture into New Mexico. The Santa Fe RoadRunners were members of the league from 2004 until their relocation to Topeka in 2007.

MJAHL announces recipients of Character, Community Leadership Awards

Press Release

The Maritime Junior A Hockey League announced the recipients of two new awards on Monday. Upon releasing the annual awards and All-Stars on March 12th, the league announced that a new set of awards would be introduced for 2009-10 in the form of the MJAHL Character Award, MJAHL Community Leadership award and the MJAHL Builders award.

Two of the new awards were announced today while the recipient of the Builders Award will be made known at the league’s AGM and Draft in Bridgewater in June.

The winner of the first MJAHL Character Award is Matt Milson of the Miramichi Timberwolves and the winner of the Community Leadership Award is Josh Coleman of the Amherst Ramblers.

To decide a recipient of the MJAHL Character award, each team is asked to nominate a player on their team that other teams hate to play against, but would love to add to their lineup – a player with outstanding grit and determination. For 2009-2010, Milson came away the clear winner.

Miramichi Head Coach and General Manager Billy McGuigan wasn’t surprised at the news of Milson’s award. “Matt is a huge part of what the Timberwolves were this year as an Assistant Captain”, said McGuigan. “ Matt is what we consider the trademark of what a player should be for our program: hard working, relentless, great penalty killer, sacrifices his body as a shot blocker, great role model in the community of Miramichi and a local player and fan favorite.”

Rambler forward Josh Coleman receives the Community Leadership award and according to Corey Crocker, Head Coach and GM of the Ramblers, is very deserving of the honour. “The Amherst Jr. Ramblers Hockey Club are very proud of Josh and his accomplishment on winning this league award. Josh demonstrates what it means to care and have pride in his community. Josh's endless hours of community service entitles him as a leader on our hockey club and a role model for all the young athletes in Amherst and the surrounding areas.

“I’m sure all teams have players like Josh but we are very thankful for what Josh does in our community".

Pride in community would be an understatement when listing Coleman’s contributions. A native of Amherst and a student at Mount Allison University, Coleman spent fourteen 6am Monday mornings this season helping minor hockey players develop their skills, served breakfast every Wednesday morning from 8am to 9am at Spring Street Academy and also spent considerable time and energies raising money for both the Children’s Wish Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the list goes on.

“Josh carries a smile on his face that carries weight in the community as a great role model and he is always willing to attend community events”, said Crocker. “He is a player that other players want to be around because of his good habits off the ice.”

The final of three new awards is the MJAHL Builders award. The Builders award will be given annually to an individual(s) that contributed special value to the success of the MJAHL as a league executive, team executive, volunteer and/or coach. The Builders award will be announced along with Executive of the Year and Coach of the Year at the Annual General meeting.

Petry Signs With Oilers

Press Release

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State junior co-captain Jeff Petry (Farmington Hills, Mich.) has signed a professional contract with the Edmonton Oilers, and will report to the Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate Springfield (Mass.) Falcons immediately, as announced by the Oilers on Friday afternoon. Petry, a second-round pick of the Oilers in 2006 (45th overall), just completed his junior season for the Spartans, and will forgo his final season of collegiate eligibility. According to the Edmonton Oilers website, Petry signed a two-year NHL entry-level contract. Petry is expected to make his professional debut this weekend, as Springfield has games at Lowell (Fri.), Portland (Sat.), and Albany (Sun.).

"Its a difficult decision to leave Michigan State and my teammates," noted the junior. "Michigan State has been a wonderful experience for me, and I have to thank Coach Comley and the rest of the MSU staff for giving me the opportunity to be a Spartan. While leaving is bittersweet, joining the Oilers organization is exciting for me and I look forward to beginning my professional career."

"Jeff is a very high-end talent," noted head coach Rick Comley. "Losing players early is a part of college hockey now, and we really look forward to watching Jeff's pro career. We wish him nothing but the best."

Petry, a three-time Most Outstanding Defenseman honoree from MSU and most recently a Second Team All-CCHA pick, is a dynamic blueliner who skates well and has offensive skill to supplement his defensive prowess. He finished the 2009-10 season with four goals and a team-best 25 assists, putting him third on the MSU scoring chart. He was seventh in the CCHA in assists, and ranked second in the league in defenseman scoring (29 points). He also ranked fourth in the league in power play points (2-16-18).

During Petry's freshman season, he was honored as an NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team selection and named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team.

In his three seasons at Michigan State, he twice was the team's top-scoring defenseman, and in 118 career games he owned a 9-58-67 scoring line. He never missed a game in his collegiate career.

Michigan State's 2009-10 squad completed its season with a 19-13-6 overall record, and were second in the CCHA behind top-ranked Miami. The Spartans were upset in the CCHA quarterfinals by archrival Michigan.

In Springfield, Petry will be reunited with former Michigan State teammate Bryan Lerg (Livonia, Mich.), who was a senior (and team captain) during Petry's freshman campaign. Also in Springfield is former Spartan Colton Fretter. who was a four-year standout at Michigan State (2002-06).

Topeka awarded 2011 Robertson Cup bid

Press Release

In front of a North American Hockey League (NAHL) single-game record crowd of 7,777 at the Kansas Expocentre on Thursday night (March 25), NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld announced that the Topeka RoadRunners have been selected to host the 2011 Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring our league championship to the Topeka community in 2011,” said Frankenfeld. “The RoadRunners organization has helped bring the NAHL to new heights, both on and off the ice, and we have no doubt they’ll host a first-class tournament.”

“To be able to host such a prestigious event like the Robertson Cup is exciting not only for our organization, but for the City of Topeka and Shawnee County,” said RoadRunners owner Don Stone. “We have the most passionate fans in the NAHL and community support that’s second to none and we can’t wait to showcase our hospitality to the entire league.”

The Kansas Expocentre, which boasts a seating capacity of 7,777, has approved a $1 million renovation project planned for this summer, which will include a new video and ribbon board.

“The Kansas Expocentre has always been proud of its hockey history and hockey family,” said Expocentre general manager H.R. Cook. “Having the Robertson Cup in Topeka will provide yet another opportunity for the citizens of Shawnee County to show their pride in our community by welcoming the players, coaches and officials with open, friendly arms.”

Since relocating from Santa Fe, N.M., after the 2006-07 season, the RoadRunners have established themselves as one of the premier teams in the NAHL, winning the league’s Organization of the Year award in 2007-08. The program has also moved over 50 players onto the collegiate and professional ranks.

“Hosting the Robertson Cup is an honor,” said RoadRunners head coach and general manager Scott Langer. “We’ve prepared ourselves for this opportunity and we’re ready to commit all our energy to being a quality host and doing everything first-class. It’s an exciting time for RoadRunner hockey.”

The five-team Robertson Cup Championship crowns the NAHL’s playoff champion (USA Hockey’s Tier II Junior A national champion). As the host team, the RoadRunners will receive an automatic bid to the 2011 tournament.

In addition to the RoadRunners, the playoff series winners from the Central, North, South and West Divisions will receive the other four bids to the tournament. If the RoadRunners win the 2011 South Division playoffs, the runner up from the South Division will receive the fifth bid.

In conjunction with the Robertson Cup Championship, the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) will showcase its Top Prospects Tournament, featuring the league’s top U18 players.

The oldest junior hockey trophy in the United States, the Robertson Cup is named in honor of Chuck Robertson, a pioneer of junior hockey in the NAHL and youth hockey in the state of Michigan. Robertson was the owner of the Paddock Pools Saints when they won a record seven straight NAHL championships from 1976-83.

Mississauga Rebels Win 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament

Press Release

Mississauga, ON - The GTHL’s Mississauga Rebels are finally satisfied after capturing the 2010 OHL Cup Championship in a thrilling 2-1 victory over the heavily favoured Toronto Marlboros Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.

Sean Monahan capped off an impressive tournament for the Rebels with two points including the game-winning goal and took home the Tim Adams Memorial Trophy as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Monahan, the Rebels’ captain, led the tournament in scoring with seven goals and six assists for 13 points in seven games, including a five-point performance Sunday morning as Player of the Game in their 5-3 semi-final win over the TPH Thunder.

“It feels great and is an honour to win this tournament” Monahan said after hoisting the OHL Cup over his head and celebrating with his teammates. “We finally came together as a family and won this as a team after struggling a lot this season.”

The Rebels entered the OHL Cup as a wildcard invite after losing to the Mississauga Reps in four straight quarter final games in the GTHL Playoffs. The Rebels went 2-1-1 in round-robin play which included a win over that same Reps team before knocking off the top-ranked Toronto Young Nationals 2-1 in Saturday’s overtime quarter final. Today they faced a Marlies team in the finals they had not beaten all season.

“It’s amazing and great to see the perseverance of these kids and I couldn’t be happier for the boys” said Head Coach Adrian Lomonaco. “We talked about never being satisfied with just being here, they did an amazing job and played with a lot of heart and with a lot of courage.”

The Rebels seemed content to slow things down in the early stages of the game which didn’t see a goal until the 6:57 mark of the third period when Brett Gustavsen deflected a shot up high and over the glove of Jake Paterson for the 1-0 lead from Monahan and Patrick Piacentini. Monahan ripped a shot from the top of the circle to make it 2-0 at 10:16 of the third with an assist credited to Zachary Fung. The Marlies, who led the tournament with 22 goals in seven games, could only find one in this contest. After a late timeout and with an empty net, Marlies Player of the Game Kyle Soman roofed a shot from in close after taking a centering pass from Matthew Finn at 14:19.

The Marlies outshot the Rebels 26-23 with Robert Adamo receiving Player of the Game honours for the second straight game for the Rebels with 25 saves.

“Words can’t describe it,” said a happy Adamo, who was called up from Bantam to play goal filling in as the starter when Ty Zastre suffered a round-robin injury. “I love this team and this organization, and winning it with them and for them is truly an honour.”

With the win, not only do the Rebels become the first wildcard team to win an OHL Cup, they showed the parity that exists between the top minor midget teams this tournament has to offer.

“This truly is the best tournament just based on the competition that exists” said Rob Kitamura, the OHL’s Director of Central Scouting and Player Development. “The Rebels showed that it is about coming together at the right time and performing when it counts. “So many of these games were close and their win today is a testament to the number of high quality players we have in our minor hockey development systems which makes this tournament an annual success.”
