Avs sign Shattenkirk, Cohen

Press Release

The Colorado Avalanche raided Boston University's blue line on Saturday, signing 2007 first-round pick Kevin Shattenkirk and second-rounder Colby Cohen to entry-level contracts.

Both players will report to the Avs' AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters.

Shattenkirk, 21, was selected with the 14th pick in the 2007 draft and served as the Terriers' captain this season as a junior -- the first non-senior to do so since 1961-62. He finished second among BU's defensemen in scoring with 29 points (7 goals, 22 assists) in 38 games. The native of Greenwich, Conn., finished his college career with 18 goals and 78 points in 121 games.

"We're excited that Kevin has signed with the organization," Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman said. "He has a bright future ahead, and we look forward to seeing him start his professional career."

Cohen, taken one round behind Shattenkirk with the 45th pick in 2007, led BU defensemen in goals this season with 14, the most by a Terrier defenseman in 32 years. The junior from Villanova, Pa., was also named the most outstanding player at the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four after scoring the winning goal in overtime of the championship game -- with Shattenkirk drawing an assist.

Cohen finished his BU career with 25 goals and 78 points in 118 games.

"Colby is a young defenseman with a bright future ahead of him," Sherman said. "We are excited to have him signed and look forward to him beginning his professional career."
