CALGARY, AB. – The Western Hockey League announced today that forward Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings, has been named the HUSKY WHL Player of the Month for March.
The 20-year-old Brandon, Manitoba native, recorded 16 points in his last six regular season games in the month of March, netting seven goals and nine assists all while maintain a plus minus rating of +10. Calvert ended the 2009-10 WHL regular season on an seven game point scoring streak, and collected points in 20 of the Wheat Kings last 23 contests.
Calvert’s consistency helped lead the Wheat Kings to eight straight wins to close out the 2009-10 WHL regular season with an overall record of 50-18-1-3 for 103 points. The Wheaties swept their 2010 WHL Playoffs first round opponent the Swift Current Broncos and will now face East Division rivals the Saskatoon Blades in the Husky Eastern Conference Semi Final.
In 68 games played this season Calvert posted career highs in goals (47) and assists (52), finishing sixth among WHL scorers with 99 points. The 5th round pick of Columbus at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Calvert recently signed a standard entry level contract with the Blue Jackets prior to the start of the 2010 WHL Playoffs.
His accomplishments make Matt Calvert a deserving choice as the HUSKY WHL Player of the Month for March.
