Mendelson Added to Steel Coaching Staff

The Chicago Steel are proud to announce that Leigh Mendelson has joined the organization as Assistant Coach.

Mendelson, who has over 20 seasons of coaching experience at the junior, professional, and international levels, will join new Head Coach Jon Waibel behind the bench for the 2010-11 season. Mendelson has previously coached in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks, Omaha Lancers, Sioux City Musketeers, and Green Bay Gamblers. He has also coached at the junior level with St. Louis (NAHL), Spokane (WHL), and served as an assistant with the U.S. National Team Development Program.

At the professional level, Mendelson was as an assistant coach with Atlantic City (ECHL) in 2001-02 and also coached professionally in the Finnish Elite League as an assistant coach with Lahti from 2002-04. After beginning last season as assistant coach with the AHL's Norfolk Admirals, Mendelson was appointed head coach on February 24, 2010 and led the Admirals to a 7-7-0-2 record over the remainder of the season.

Mendelson was part of the Omaha Lancers coaching staff when they captured the Clark Cup as USHL champions in both 2001 and 2008. He also served as an assistant coach with the silver medal-winning USA Hockey National Development Team in 1999 at the IIHF Four Nations Tournament. Coaching since 1990, Mendelson has helped produce hundreds of NCAA athletes and dozens of NHL draft picks.
