Chinese National Junior Team Visits Waterloo

The Waterloo Black Hawks play in the United States Hockey League’s Eastern Conference, but Sunday they will play an opponent from the far east; the Chinese National Junior Team visits Young Arena in Waterloo for an exhibition game on October 10th.

The Chinese squad, composed of players under age 20, is touring the United States in preparation for their appearance in the Division II World Junior Championships later this year. The meeting with Waterloo was organized with the assistance of Anfu Wang – father of Black Hawks forward Guan Wang – who was a member of China’s National Hockey Team before moving to Ames and playing for Iowa State University’s club team as a student.

Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O’Handley says he is looking forward to the game as a chance to provide his team with some additional ice time in the early season, and as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of the participants on both sides.

“It’s a great opportunity to have that many young men from a different country see what we have here in the Cedar Valley,” said O’Handley, “And it’s a great reminder to our players that they play a game that people are passionate about all over the world.”
