Press Release
The Youngstown Phantoms announced that forward Dylan Margonari has committed to play collegiate hockey at Minnesota State Univeristy, Mankato beginning in the fall of 2012.
Margonari, 18, has recorded two points (1g, 1a) and 19 penalty minutes through 10 games for the Phantoms this season. It is the second USHL season for the native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania after posting six points (4g, 2a) in 23 games in 2009-10.
"It is definitely a relief to make my commitment," said Margonari. "The WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) was a league I have always wanted to play in and now that this process is over I can fully focus on the 50 games we have left this season."
PhantomsHead Coach Curtis Carr feels that Margonari will fit right into the elite level of hockey at Mankato and in the WCHA.
"The Olympic size rink [at Minnesota State University] fits Margonari perfectly," said Carr. "He is a great skater and a blue collar hockey player. He is the total package on both sides of the puck. I have worked with Dylan since he was fifteen and it is great to see him secure his hockey future."
Five other USHL players are committed to attend Minnesota State University, Mankato; Jean-Paul LaFontaine (Green Bay Gamblers), Brett Stern (Green Bay Gamblers), Josh Berge (Lincoln Stars), Max Gaede (Sioux City Musketeers), and Zach Palmquist (Waterloo Black Hawks).
The Mavericks currently have 14 USHL alumni on the roster for the 2010-11 season; Cameron Cooper (Tri-City Storm), Corey Leivermann (Fargo Force), Danny Heath (Des Moines Buccaneers), J.P. Burkemper (Fargo Force), Zach Lehrke (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Chase Grant (Fargo Force), Andrew Sackrison (Tri-City Storm), Kurt Davis (Green Bay Gamblers), Eriah Hayes (Waterloo Black Hawks), Joe Schiller (Green Bay Gamblers), Brett Peterson (Indiana Ice), Channing Boe (Green Bay Gamblers), Eli Zuck (Tri-City Storm), and Michael Dorr (Des Moines Buccaneers).
In addition, associate head coach Darren Blue played two seasons in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers (1989-91) and assistant coach Todd Knott both played (Lincoln Stars 1998-99) and spent five seasons in the League as a coach (Des Moines Buccaneers 2005-08, Sioux City Musketeers 2008-09).
