The QMJHL, its franchises and TELUS raise over $115,000 for the fight against breast cancer

Press Release

The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Gilles Courteau, today unveiled the total amount raised by the League’s eighteen clubs during special promotional night activities which were held throughout the month of October to help in the fight against breast cancer.

"The QMJHL and each of its eighteen franchises worked very hard to develop pink prototype jerseys in collaboration with our official supplier, Reebok/CCM, and its partner in this project, SP Apparel," said the Commissioner. "More than 400 pink jerseys worn by the players were sold with the proceeds being distributed to local, regional or national organizations dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. Furthermore, the QMJHL’s major partner, TELUS, came on board, contributing $100 for every goal scored during the 18 fight against breast cancer games. In total, 125 goals were scored, bringing TELUS’ contribution to $12,500. Today, I am proud to announce that over $115,000 have been generated as a result of our clubs’ efforts. Congratulations to all of our teams for their valued contribution. Also, thank you to our great fans for their incredible generosity and to TELUS for their lending their support behind this important endeavour."

The amounts generated by the goals through the TELUS promotion will benefit La Fondation du Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec (CHUQ) to help the CHUQ purchase state-of-the-art equipment for breast cancer treatment. TELUS invites fans to visit its boutiques. The company will give $25 to the CHUQ each time a pink smart phone is purchased (BlackBerry Curve 3G, BlackBerry Curve 8530 or BlackBerry Pearl 3G – Province of Quebec only) until December 31.

Most people know or care for someone who is or who has been afflicted by this terrible disease. Statistics show that one out of every nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and its eighteen franchises are proud to play their part in the fight against breast cancer. As a result of fundraising initiatives such as these, vital research in the field has enabled survival rates to jump 25% in the past 20 years.
