SUNDSVALL, Sweden - Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) notched a power play goal and John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 38 saves, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Sweden, 3-1, here tonight at Gardehov Arena, in an exhibition game leading up to the 2010 Under-18 Four Nations Cup.
"Tonight was a good learning experience for our team," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "We found out the difference between the U18 and U17 year in this team's first international loss."
Team USA grabbed an early lead less than two minutes into the first period, when Grimaldi scored on the power play. J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) collected an assist on the play. Sweden then notched three goals in the second period to win the pre-tournament contest, 3-1.
Gibson made 38 saves for Team USA in the loss, while Niklas Lundstrom stopped 31 shots in the win for Sweden.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team will next face Finland on Thursday (Nov. 12) at 9:30 a.m. ET.
