Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Swift Current Broncos’ forward Cody Eakin is the CHL Player of the Week after scoring nine points including six goals and three assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-6 in three games for the week ending December 12.
Eakin led the Broncos to two straight wins earning first star honours in both contests beginning last Tuesday night in Chilliwack. He scored his fourth career hat-trick including the game-winner and also chipped in an assist in the 5-4 win over the Bruins. He scored the game-winner again on Wednesday night and added two assists in the 4-1 win over the Kelowna Rockets. His week wrapped up Friday with two goals as third star despite a 3-2 loss to the Kamloops Blazers.
Eakin, a 19-year-old from Winnipeg, MB, is playing in his fourth full WHL season with the Broncos. The Washington Capitals prospect, selected 85th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, has 39 points in 30 games so far this season and is currently attending Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp.
Also considered for the award this week was rookie defenceman Nick Ebert of the Windsor Spitfires who scored three goals and six assists for nine points in three games. Ondrej Palat of the Drummondville Voltigeurs was also considered after scoring three goals and five assists for eight points in three games.
