Capitals Sign Defenseman Brett Flemming

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Brett Flemming to a three-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Flemming, who was drafted by the Capitals in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, has 12 assists and 14 points in 25 games with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season. He is second among the team’s defensemen in scoring and fifth on the team in assists.

The 5’11”, 185-pound defenseman ranked sixth on Mississauga in assists with 23 and 10th in points with 24 last season. Flemming ranked fourth on the team with 90 penalty minutes, while finishing fourth on the team with a +22 rating last season. Flemming registered five assists, 10 penalty minutes and had a +5 rating in 16 playoff games last season as Mississauga defeated Peterborough and Ottawa before falling to Barrie in the conference finals in the OHL.

The Regina, Saskatchewan, native is in his fourth season with Mississauga and has 69 assists and 76 points in 204 games.
