Westside's King signs with Colorado College

Press Release

Westside Warriors defenceman Michael King, 17, has accepted a scholarship to the NCAA Division I hockey program at Colorado College, the team announced Thursday.

Warriors head coach and general manager Darren Yopyk says the 6-4, 200-pound blueliner will play next season for the Warriors, preparing himself to play for the Tigers in 2012.

“This is an exciting day for Michael, as he continues to grow into an exceptional prospect in the BCHL and beyond,” said Yopyk. “CC has recruited a young man who will be a tremendous asset to their institution on the ice, in the classroom, and in their community.

“Coach Owens and his staff have done an excellent job in Colorado Springs, and Michael will help them build on an already storied tradition at Colorado College.

Colorado College competes in the NCAA Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) conference. King becomes the 10th player on the Warriors roster to ink a deal with an NCAA team.

“As an organization, we continue to demonstrate we are meeting our mandate of developing players and moving them forward in their hockey and academic careers,” said Yopyk. “We are proud that the majority of players that play for us secure scholarships in either the NCAA or in Canada, in the CIS or ACAC.”

The Westside Warriors congratulate Michael and his family for receiving a scholarship to help him reach his ultimate goal of playing in the NHL while pursuing a college degree.
