CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Austin Fyten of the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Fyten picked up 10 points, scoring four goals and six assists to go with a +5 rating, in four games over the past week.
On Monday, December 27th, Fyten scored one goal and one assist in a 3-2 loss to the Oil Kings in Edmonton. In the back half of the home-and-home series with the Oil Kings in Lethbridge on Wednesday, December 28th, Fyten picked up 2 assists in the ‘Canes 5-4 shoot-out loss to Edmonton. Following a 5-0 road loss to the Red Deer Rebels on December 30th, the Hurricanes were back at home on January 1st, playing host to the Swift Current Broncos. Fyten scored his second career hat-trick, added three assists and was named the games 1st Star as the Hurricanes downed the Broncos 8-2.
Fyten’s 10 points in the past four games has him ranked 2nd in Hurricanes team scoring 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) in just 22 games played. The Hurricanes currently sit fifth in the WHL Central Division with a 13-17-2-6 record for 34 points.
Fyten, a 19 year old from Sundre, AB, is playing his third full season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He has appeared in 163 career WHL games collecting 46 goals and 52 assists for 98 points thus far.
The WHL has also nominated James Priestner of the Prince George Cougars for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Priestner posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 43 of 45 shots faced for a 1.000 goals-against average and a 0.956 save percentage. Priestner, a native of Edmonton, AB, led the Cougars to a 5-0 win over the Chilliwack Bruins and a 5-2 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors.
