Redhawks win big in Alberni Valley, Chiefs drop Kings

Press Release

The Malmo Redhawks continue to make a big impact on BCHL competition as they downed the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 8-2 Sunday. The team they beat Friday, the Powell River Kings, lost again - this time to the Langley Chiefs.

In Alberni Valley, Malmo led 5-1 after 20 minutes as red-hot Kim Runnermark's hat trick was interrupted only by teammate Victor Mangs' tally. After Runnermark turned the trick, Viktor Holmkvist potted the fifth of the period for the Redhawks. Casey Bailey replied for the 'Dogs just before the end of the first on a goal set up by Oliver McCluskey and Josh Mitchell.

Malmo's Max Gortz and Alberni Valley's Trent Dorais exchanged goals in the second and Holmkvist and Runnermark, with his fourth of the contest, scored in the third.

Fabian Sivnert made 30 saves in the Malmo crease while Kiefer Giroux stopped 21 shots for Alberni Valley.

In Langley, the Chiefs started the new year on a good note with a 4-2 win over Powell River. The Kings were coming off their 6-4 loss to Malmo Friday and never led, as Tim Daly opened scoring for the Chiefs on the power play in the first. The Kings tied it on a man-advantage marker from Cohen Adair but Langley reeled off goals from Josh Hansen, Kody Dhaliwal and Josh Myers to start the third. Chris Williams scored late for Powell River.

In Coquitlam, the Express held a 3-0 first period lead but had no answer for the Cowichan Valley Capitals in the third as the Caps scored five times, including two power play markers from Tyler Matheson less than 30 seconds apart to grab a 6-4 win. Mike Hammond had a goal and two assists for the Caps and Brendon MacDonald was first star with a goal and an assist.

In Salmon Arm, overtime solved nothing as the SilverBacks and Trail Smoke Eaters skated to a 2-2 draw. All four goals of the game came on the power play with Bryce Gervais tallying in the first for the 'Backs, Paul Mailey and Sam Mellor in the second for Trail and Brett Knowles in the third to tie it. Kiefer Smiley made 33 saves for Trail while Kris Moore stopped 27 for Salmon Arm.
