Press Release
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with Home Hardware Stores Limited today announced that former Toronto Maple Leafs’ star Wendel Clark will participate in the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game set for Wednesday January 19, 2011, at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, ON.
A Kelvington, SK native, Clark played two years in the Western Hockey League for the Saskatoon Blades from 1983-1985, collecting 155 points and 478 penalty minutes.
Clark will stand behind the bench for Team Orr as an Associate Coach next to former Maple Leafs’ teammate and Team Orr Head Coach Doug Gilmour as they compete against coaching counterpart Don Cherry in an event that features 40 of the CHL’s top players eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
“I’m happy to participate in this showcase event with the top young stars from our game” said Clark.
Clark is the only player ever to be selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the first overall pick after being selected in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft from the Saskatoon Blades. A Maple Leafs’ captain from 1991-94, Clark played in 793 career NHL games producing 564 points and scoring a career-best 46 goals and 30 assists for 76 points in 64 games in the 1993-94 season playing alongside Gilmour. His legendary number 17 jersey was honoured by the Maple Leafs in November, 2008, when it was raised to the rafters at Air Canada Centre.
The rosters for the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game were selected by the 30 NHL General Managers with NHL Central Scouting and include 18 players from the Ontario Hockey League, 13 players from the Western Hockey League, and nine players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League including Sean Couturier of the Drummondville Voltigeurs who competed with Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
The event also features a skills competition and three-on-three challenge on Tuesday January 18, 2011, with the game to be broadcast nationally live on Rogers Sportsnet and RDS.
