CALGARY, AB. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Red Deer Rebels forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is the WHL Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Nugent-Hopkins picked up 12 points, scoring five goals and seven assists to go with a +5 rating in four games this past week, helping the Rebels to a 3-0-1-0 record.
On Tuesday, March 8th, the Red Deer Rebels were in Prince George to face the Cougars. Nugent-Hopkins scored the game winning goal, added three assists and was named the games 2nd Star as the Rebels downed the Cougars 7-0. On Friday March 11th, the Rebels travelled to Medicine Hat to take on the Tigers. Nugent-Hopkins collected a pair of assists and was named the games 2nd Star in the Rebels 3-2 over-time loss at the hands of the Tigers. The Rebels were back at the Enmax Centrium on Saturday, March 12th, hosting the Swift Current Broncos. Nugent-Hopkins scored three goals for his third hat-trick of the season, which included the game winner, added two assists and was named the games 1st Star in the Rebels 5-0 win over the Broncos. The next day, Sunday, March 13th, the Rebels were in Calgary to face the Hitmen. Nugent-Hopkins picked up one goal and was named the games 2nd Star in the Rebels 3-2 win.
Nugent-Hopkins’ has 15 points in his past five games ranking him 4th among all WHL scorers with 102 points (28 goals, 74 assists) in 67 games played. The Rebels are 4-0-1-0 in their past 5 contests and currently sit second in the WHL Eastern Conference with a 46-16-4-4 record for 100 points.
Nugent-Hopkins, a 17 year-old from Burnaby, BC, is playing his second full season with the Rebels who made him the 1st overall pick in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. The 2009-10 WHL Rookie of the Year was named Team Orr Player of the Game at the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Nugent-Hopkins also is the WHL’s highest-ranked NHL Draft-eligible prospect in NHL Central Scouting’s Mid-Term rankings for players eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
The WHL has also nominated Adam Brown of the Kelowna Rockets for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Brown posted a 3-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 93 of 95 shots faced for a 0.65 goals-against average and a 0.979 save percentage. Brown, a native of Yorba Linda, CA, led the Rockets to a win over the Tri-City Americans and a pair of victories over the Kamloops Blazers.
