SHANE McCOLGAN WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets forward Shane McColgan is the WHL Player of the Week.

McColgan picked up five points, scoring three goals and two assists to go with a +2 rating in two games over the last week, helping the Rockets to 4-0 series win over the Prince George Cougars in the 2010 Husky WHL Eastern Conference Quarter-Final.

On Tuesday, March 29th, the Rockets were in Prince George to face the Cougars in game three of their opening round series. McColgan scored a goal, an assist and was named the games 1st Star as the Rockets outlasted the Cougars 7-6. The next night, Wednesday, March 30th, McColgan found the back of the net twice, including the game-winner, added an assist and was named the 1st Star of game four as the Rockets defeated the Cougars 4-2.

The Kelowna Rockets have advanced to the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Semi-Final and will face the top ranked Portland Winterhawks starting on Thursday, April 7th at 7:00pm PT in the Rose Garden.

McColgan, an 18-year-old (born 1993) from Manhattan Beach, CA, is playing his second full season with the Kelowna Rockets. He played in the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and in NHL Central Scouting’s Mid-Term rankings he is projected as a 4th round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Drew Owsley of the Tri-City Americans for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Owsley posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 39 of 40 shots faced for a 0.50 goals-against average and .975 save percentage. Owsley, a 20-year-old (born 1991) from Lethbridge, AB, led the Americans to a pair of wins last week over the Vancouver Giants to win their opening round WHL Playoff series 4-0.
