MCGILLIS SCORES PAIR IN DEBUT TO HELP VIPERS STAY PERFECT

Press Release

CAMROSE, Alta. – Patrick McGillis scored twice in his tournament debut and Darren Nowick added a pair of insurance goals late in the third period as the Vernon Vipers stayed undefeated and put the Wellington Dukes on the verge of elimination with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Vernon has now gone 18 games without losing a game at the RBC Cup in regulation time, dating back to the preliminary round of the 1999 tournament. The Vipers are 17-1 during that stretch, with the lone loss an overtime setback to Dauphin in last year’s tournament opener.

David Robinson had the other goal for Vernon (3-0), which will finish no lower than second in the preliminary round depending on the outcome of tonight’s Pembroke vs. Vernon game and the Vipers’ game against the Lumber Kings on Thursday.

Darcy Murphy and Joe Zarbo scored the goals for Wellington (0-3), which pulled to within a goal on Zarbo’s power play early in the third period but could get no closer. After outshooting their opponents in each of their first two losses, the Dukes were outshot 46-26 by Vernon, including 23-10 in the first period.

Both teams finish the preliminary round Thursday – Vernon takes on Pembroke in the early game (3:30 p.m. MT), while Wellington faces Portage in the late contest (7:30 p.m. MT).
