Stars Sign Defense Prospect John Klingberg

Frisco, Tex. – The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed defenseman John Klingberg to a three-year entry level contract.

“We are excited to reach an agreement with John,” Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. “He is a skilled player and we are encouraged by his development over the past year in Sweden and at the World Junior Championships. We are expecting great things from him as he continues progressing toward the NHL.”

Klingberg, 19, spent last season with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League. He skated in 26 games for the club, collecting five assists and 10 penalty minutes. The Gothenberg, Sweden, native represented his country at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Buffalo, skating in all six games for Sweden and posting a goal, an assist and a +2 rating during the tournament.

The 6-0, 158-pound defenseman spent the 2009-10 season with Frolunda’s under-18 squad, skating in 20 games, posting 16 points (3g, 13a) and 22 penalty minutes. He also recorded 9 points (2g, 7a) and 10 penalty minutes in seven playoff games for Frolunda. Klingberg was drafted by Dallas in the fifth round (131st overall) at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles.
