Winterhawks’ Sven Bartschi Named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Sven Bartschi of the Portland Winterhawks is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 8. In three games Bartschi scored five goals and two assists for seven points with a plus-minus rating of plus-2.

Bartschi led the Portland WInterhawks to the WHL Championship Series scoring a goal and two assists last Monday in Game six of the WHL’s Western Conference Finals defeating the Spokane Chiefs 6-3. Facing the Kootenay Ice in the Championship Series, Bartschi scored twice and was named first star of the 4-3 overtime win in Game one on Friday, and then added another two goals on Saturday in Game two despite a 7-5 loss. Game three of the series takes place Tuesday night in Kootenay tied 1-1.

Bartschi, a 17-year-old from Langenthal, Switzerland, is playing in his first WHL season and is ranked seventh overall by NHL Central Scouting for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently tied for second in WHL playoff scoring with 25 points in 18 games.

Justin Shugg of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors was also considered after scoring three goals and three assists for six points in four games of the OHL Championship Series against the Owen Sound Attack. In the QMJHL, Hubert Labrie has scored two goals and one assist for the Gatineau Olympiques in three games.
