Fronts Acquire Bobkov from London

Press Release

The Kingston Frontenac’s General Manager Doug Gilmour is pleased to announce that the Club has added overaged goaltender Igor Bobkov from the London Knights in exchange for Kingston’s 5th round selection in 2012, along with London’s 13th round selection (previously acquired by the Frontenacs) in the 2012 OHL Priority selection.

“Igor’s presence and mature attitude will only help to enhance the development of our younger players,” said General Manager Doug Gilmour. “This is a young man that has the ability to not only keep us in games, but to win them as well,” he added.

Bobkov, a third round selection, 76th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2009 NHL Entry draft appeared in 21 games for the Knights last season. He gained a great amount of notoriety in the hockey world, when he came into the gold medal game at the World Juniors in Buffalo in January in relief of Dimitri Shikin and stood on his head stopping all 20 shots he faced by Team Canada in Team Russia’s come from behind victory in the gold medal match. Bobkov was awarded the Player of the Game for Russia for his heroics. After his OHL season was finished this year, he appeared in two games in the American Hockey League for the Syracuse Crunch, Anaheim’s top farm club, winning both. He has also appeared with Team Russia in the World Junior U18’s in Fargo, North Dakota 2009 where he was selected the best goaltender in the tournament when Russia won the silver medal. In the 2010 World Juniors hosted in Regina and Saskatoon, Bobkov was the starting goaltender for Team Russia, and appeared in all six games.

“With our team in development mode, we felt it was very important to have a stabilizing influence within our dressing room,” said Doug Gilmour.
