OJHL'S TOP D-MAN COMMITS TO MERCYHURST

Press Release

Vaughan Vipers defenceman and the OJHL's Best Defenceman during the 2010-11 season, Anthony Mastrodicasa, has confirmed his commitment to join the Mercyhurst University Lakers of the NCAA Division I, Atlantic Hockey conference. Mastrodicasa has yet to decide whether he will attend Mercyhurst this upcoming season, or remain in the OJHL with the Vipers for one final season.

During his third season in the OJHL, the Vipers veteran rearguard had a career-best season, leading all defencemen with 17 goals and 53 points. The 19-year old native of Vaughan took charge of the Vipers power play all season, not only leading the club with 12 power play goals, but finishing fourth among all players in the league. Mastrodicasa's impressive season, in which he helped lead his club to a South Division regular season title, saw him earn South-East Conference 1st Team All-Star honours, as well as the OJHL's Best Defenceman Award.

Vipers' Head Coach Jason Fortier was asked how he felt about potentially losing Anthony so late in the summer, "I would be pleased to have Anthony back and see him flourish one more season but if he has the opportunity to play NCAA hockey next season, then I can only wish him all the best and glow with pride. We are in the business of helping young men chase their dreams and it feels good when you see them reaching their goals." Fortier was quick to add, "If Anthony does not return, then we have a big hole that we do not expect to fill. It is all part of the game and we were faced with the same situation last year with Ryan Sproul. We helped him make the right decision and supported him leaving for the OHL. We know how that turned out." (Ryan was a 2nd round pick of the Detroit Red Wings at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft).

Congratulations to Anthony and best of luck next season and beyond!
