Labanc to NTDP

Press Release

NEWARK, NJ – Fresh off his 2014 commitment to the University of Notre Dame, New Jersey Rockets forward Kevin Labanc (’95 birth year – Staten Island, NY) was presented with many options for the upcoming season; none of which were easier to walk from than the others and each one presented its individual pros and cons. Until recently, the plan was to continue his development with the Rockets and eventually make the move to Des Moines (USHL) and then continue onto Notre Dame and then to the pro ranks. “I was really excited about skating for the Rockets,” offered Labanc. “Under Coach (Thornton), I’ve developed so much, I was looking forward to continuing to learn from the best coaching staff I’ve ever had.”

This afternoon, the entire 2011-2012 plan was disrupted by a giant red, white and blue flag. Earlier today, the Staten Island native was offered and accepted a place with the USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The program consists of a U17 and a U18 program, which is combined into one team, which, in addition to its commitment to international and collegiate competition, plays a full-season 60 game schedule in the USHL. “It was a very tough decision for me,” added Labanc. “You want to make the best decision for yourself and I am really excited to have the opportunity to represent my country in international competition. So once NTDP offered, the decision to go was pretty easy. Playing for either Des Moines or the Rockets this season would be great, but only the NTDP presents the opportunity for me to get a lot of ice time against great competition from the United States and around the world.”

Kevin will report to the program on September 1st and that date couldn’t come any sooner. “I can’t wait for September 1st,” said Labanc.” “I would like to thank the Rockets organization and the entire coaching staff for everything they’ve done for my development.”

“Kevin will be following in the footsteps over for Rocket David Kolomatis in playing for the NTDP,” offered New Jersey Rockets Head Coach and Director of Player Development Bob Thornton. “The New Jersey Rockets organization has a proven track record within the USA Hockey Junior program with Kolomatis and John Carlson, the Hero for USA Hockey in 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship. They are now getting an exciting prospect in Kevin, who will no doubt excel for that program. Kevin’s star has been on the rise and now the entire world will get to notice. We wish Kevin the best in playing for USA Hockey.”

“The entire New Jersey Rockets organization could not be prouder of Kevin on his accomplishments these past few months,” commented New Jersey Rockets executive Peggy Del Mauro. “We wish Kevin nothing but the best as prepares to join the National Team Development
