RED GETS SECOND STRAIGHT INTERSQUAD WIN WITH CONVINCING VICTORY OVER WHITE

CALGARY, Alta. – Six third-period goals were the difference as Red scored its second intersquad victory in as many nights with an 8-2 win over White on Monday night at Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp.

Red’s Chandler Stephenson (Saskatoon, Sask./Regina, WHL) and White’s Robert Trzonkowski (Calgary, Alta./Calgary, WHL) traded goals in the early minutes of the first period and Jarrod Maidens (Niagara Falls, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) tallied for Red in the first minute of the second, the only goals of the opening 40 minutes.

The floodgates opened for Red in the third, with Thomas Wilson (Toronto, Ont./Plymouth, OHL), Gianluca Curcuruto (Richmond Hill, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), Andreas Athanasiou (Woodbridge, Ont./London, OHL), Kerby Rychel (Tecumseh, Ont./Windsor, OHL), Félix Girard (Cap-Rouge, Que./Baie-Comeau, QMJHL) and Jesse Graham (Toronto, Ont./Niagara, OHL) scoring in a span of 14:48 to turn a one-goal lead into a runaway.

Brandon Magee (Edmonton, Alta./Victoria, WHL) rounded out the scoring for White in the game’s final minute.

Stephenson, Athanasiou and Wilson each had a goal and an assist for Red, who had eight different players score goals. Gemel Smith (Toronto, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL), Troy Bourke (Onoway, Alta./Prince George, WHL) and Derrick Pouliot (Weyburn, Sask./Portland, WHL) also chipped in offensively, earning a pair of assists each.

Daniel Altshuller (Nepean, Ont./Nepean, CCHL) earned the win, making 22 saves as Red was outshot 26-24 by White. Domenic Graham (Gatineau, Que./Drummondville, QMJHL) suffered the loss between the pipes for White.

The teams will play the third and final intersquad game on Tuesday morning, with puck drop set for 11:30 a.m. MT.

The final roster for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team will be announced Tuesday afternoon, with the team departing for 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Wednesday.
