Cam Braes Named Hurricanes Captain

Press Release

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes were proud to announce this afternoon that veteran forward Cam Braes has been named the 20th Captain in Lethbridge Hurricanes history. Braes follows in the footsteps of three of his former teammates – Mike Reddington (2010-11); Carter Bancks (2009-10) and Ben Wright (2007-2009) who have worn the “C” during his five career in Lethbridge. Braes currently sits on the edge of history as not only is he nearing his 300th WHL game – but his 276 WHL Regular season games are only 60 off of Shane Peacock’s 336 career games – A Hurricanes club record. If he completes all 72 regular season games this season – he would rank 12th all-time in WHL history with every one of his 348 games played in a Hurricanes jersey.

Braes, a homegrown Hurricanes talent - was drafted in the third round (48th overall) in the Canes impressive 2006 Bantam draft which included the likes of Austin Fyten and Carter Ashton. He remains one of the Canes only remaining players from the 07-08 WHL Eastern Conference Championship team. That season, he was the recipient of the Hurricanes “Fittest Rookie” award for the first year player who performs best in the Training Camp fitness testing and finished his WHL rookie year with 19 points (11G,8A) while receiving the 2008 Hurricanes Most Sportsmanlike Player Award.

In 08-09, he was the recipient of the 2009 Hardest Working Hurricane Award and in 09-10 Braes was named an Alternate Captain and winner of the 2010 Hurricanes Three Stars Award. Both years he set new career highs for points in a season and in 09-10 he was second on the team in scoring with 53 points (25G, 28A). Braes ended last season (10-11) with another career year as he tallied 61 points (31G, 30A) and 109 PIMs en route to the Hurricanes Top Scorer and Three Stars award. The native of Shawnigan Lake, BC became the Hurricanes first player to tackle the 30 goal plateau since Carter Ashton accomplished the feat in 08-09 and he is only the fourth player in team history to be a multi-time winner of the Three Stars Award; the others being Byron Ritchie, Domenic Pittis and Steve Nemeth.
