Coquitlam captain Petan is first Express scholarship player this season

Press Release

Wearing a captain's 'C' and leading your team in scoring is a good way to capture the attention of college scouts and it's paid off for Coquitlam Express captain Alex Petan who has secured a scholarship to play for the Michigan Tech Huskies next year.

The Delta native has seven goals and five assists in seven games so far this season to lead the team. After several talks during the summer with the Huskies, Petan agreed to an offer this week.

"My goal this year as a 19-year-old was to commit to a a school and not play my 20-year-old year (in Junior A)," said Petan. "Pressure came with that but I've been focused right from the get go, my expectations are high and I just want to keep going now."

Petan has points in each of the Express' seven games this season and produced a hat trick against the Langley Rivermen Oct. 7 in what was the second of back-to-back three-point nights.

In school, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound right winger plans to work towards a business degree. And he's already up to speed on how the Huskies are doing this season.

"I've been on their website and checked their roster," said Petan of the team that has Surrey Eagles product Riley Sweeney and should include Prince George Spruce Kings alum Justin Fillion in the near future. "They're off to a good start this season so I'm excited to be part of that club and for next season to start."
