TIGERS' ETEM NAMED WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Medicine Hat Tigers’ forward Emerson Etem is the WHL Player of the Week.

Etem picked up seven points, scoring six goals and one assist to go with a +2 rating, in three games over the past week helping the Tigers to a 2-1-0-0 road record.

On Thursday, October 6, the Tigers began a five game road trip through the WHL B.C. Division, starting with a pair of games in Victoria. In the first game Etem scored two goals and was named the games 1st Star as the Tigers doubled up the Royals 4-2. The next night, Friday, October 7, Etem picked up his second hat-trick of the season, finding the net three times, added an assist and was again named the games 1st Star in the Tigers 5-4 loss to Victoria. On Saturday, October 8, the Tigers were in Vancouver to face the Giants at the Pacific Coliseum. Etem scored one goal and was named the games 2nd Star as the Tigers edged the Giants 5-4.

Etem has goals in all seven games played this season and leads the WHL with 12 markers and sits 4th among all scorers with 14 points (12 goals, 2 assists) to help the Tigers to a 5-3-0-0 start to the 2011-12 season. A 19-year-old from Long Beach, CA, Etem is entering his third full season with the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Californian enjoyed career highs in all offensive categories last season, scoring 45 goals and 35 assists for 80 points. Etem recently signed an NHL entry level contract with the Anahiem Ducks who selected the forwarded 29th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft. This is his first WHL Player of the Week Award.

The WHL has also nominated Andrey Makarov of the Saskatoon Blades for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Makarov posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week, stopping 59 of 61 shots faced for a 1.000 goals-against average and 0.967 save percentage. Makarov, a native of Kazan, Russia, led the Blades to a 4-1 win over the Prince George Cougars and a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
