USHL Honors - Week Three

Press Release

The United States Hockey League today announced the weekly award winners for the third week of the 2011-12 USHL regular season.

Congratulations to forward Kevin Roy of the Lincoln Stars, named CCM Offensive Player of the Week; defenseman Mike Matheson of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week; and Alex Lyon of the Omaha Lancers, who earned honors as the Reebok USHL Goaltender of the Week.

Roy scored four points (3g, 1a) as the Stars picked up a pair of weekend victories. After being held scoreless through his first three USHL games, Roy contributed to all four goals in the 4-1 victory vs. Sioux City on Saturday. The 18-year-old assisted on a first-period goal for the Stars before taking over in the third period with three consecutive goals to record the “natural hat trick”. His first goal of the period was the first USHL goal for the native of Lac Beauport, Quebec and proved to be the game-winner. Roy also recorded a game high seven shots on goal. The rookie forward was selected by the Stars in the first round (8th overall) of the 2011 USHL Entry Draft. He is committed to play collegiate hockey at Brown University.

Matheson recorded three points (2g, 1a) and a plus-two rating to lead the Fighting Saints to consecutive weekend victories. Late in the first period on Friday, he scored his first USHL goal, which proved to be the game-winner in the 3-1 victory against Waterloo. The rookie defenseman then dished out an assist on his team’s first goal of the game before adding one of his own in the 4-2 win over Green Bay on Saturday. Matheson is a 17-year-old native of Point-Claire, Quebec and was selected by the Fighting Saints in the 2010 USHL Futures Draft before joining the team this season. He is a top prospect for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and is committed to play hockey at Boston College following his USHL career.

Lyon stopped all 27 shots he faced for Omaha, including 14 in the second period, during the 1-0 victory vs. Fargo on Saturday. He has yet to allow a goal in regulation this season as he earned his second shutout of the season, but the first USHL career victory for the native of Baudette, Minnesota. He got a bit of revenge vs. Fargo after suffering the 1-0 shootout loss to them on October 7th, a game in which Lyon still earned a shutout after not allowing a goal through 60 minutes of regulation and a five-minute overtime period. The 18-year-old Lancers netminder got a taste of the USHL last season when he played one game for Cedar Rapids. He is committed to play collegiate hockey at Yale University.
