Schedule Youth Olympics

ZURICH – The International Ice Hockey Federation has published the schedule of the ice hockey tournaments at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

Host Austria will open the men’s ice hockey tournament for boys born in 1996 against Finland on 13th January 2012. Russia and Canada will play the other game on the opening day.

The women’s ice hockey tournament for girls born in 1994 will be kicked off the same day with Austria playing a neighbourly clash against Slovakia before top-seeded Sweden faces Germany the same day.

The tournaments include the top-eight participating nations according to a combined men’s and women’s world ranking with one team in either tournament plus Austria, which is represented in both tournaments as the host nation.

In each tournament the five teams play a single round robin and the best four teams advance to the semi-finals. The gold medal games will be staged on 22nd January 2012.

In addition to the tournaments the Skills Challenge in ice hockey will be staged for the first time at an Olympic event. 15 female and 15 male athletes from nations other than the ones in the tournaments (plus from Austria) will battle for medals in a series of six tests.

In total 200 athletes from 26 nations will participate in the ice hockey events at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Innsbruck 2012 will showcase over 1,000 young athletes in the seven sports on the programme: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing.
