The United States Hockey League today announced the weekly award winners for the 12th week of the 2011-12 USHL regular season.
Award winners include forwards Mike Ambrosia of the Youngstown Phantoms and Tim Bonner of the Tri-City Storm, named co-recipients of CCM Offensive Player of the Week; defenseman Eric Sweetman of the Youngstown Phantoms, selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week; and Pheonix Copley of the Tri-City Storm who earned Reebok USHL Goaltender of the Week.
Ambrosia scored five points (3g, 3a) and earned a plus-three rating in two victories as the Phantoms head into the holiday break riding a four-game win streak. He was a force on special teams as four of his points (2g, 2a) came either on the power play or penalty kill. The Phantoms captain scored two goals and dished out an assist in Friday’s 5-3 win to hand Green Bay their first loss in regulation since November 4th. Ambrosia then had another three-point night (1g, 2a) in the 7-4 win at Des Moines on Saturday. In the second period, he scored a shorthanded goal and recorded a shorthanded assist. The 19-year-old from Chatham, New Jersey leads the Phantoms with 24 points (7g, 17a) in 23 games.
Bonner tallied five points (3g, 2a) and a plus-five rating as the Storm won a pair of games to push their winning streak to three. He recorded three points (1g, 2a) and a game high plus-three rating in the 7-1 win against Sioux City on Tuesday. The 19-year-old followed up by scoring two of the team’s three goals in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Sioux City. Bonner is a native of Maple Grove, Minnesota and has appeared in all 25 games for the Storm this season, scoring 13 points (7g, 6a). He is committed to Yale University following his USHL career.
Sweetman recorded two points (1g, 1a) and a plus-four rating to help the Phantoms earn a pair of wins. He helped limit the USHL’s highest scoring team, the Green Bay Gamblers (4.12 goals per game), in Friday’s 5-3 win. The 17-year-old then had two points (1g, 1a) in Saturday’s 7-4 victory over Des Moines. Sweetman also posted a USHL career best plus-four rating during Youngstown’s fourth straight win. The defenseman is a native of Woodbine, Maryland and is playing his first USHL season, recording four points (2g, 2a) and a plus-six rating while playing all 23 games for the Phantoms.
Copley posted a 1.00 goals-against-average and a .972 save percentage in two victories for the Storm. He made a season high 42 saves in the 7-1 win vs. Sioux City on Tuesday. The 19-year-old then followed up with 38 saves on Saturday during the 3-1 victory over Sioux City. It was the third straight victory for the Storm. Copley is a native of North Pole, Alaska and has won five of his last six starts, posting a 1.20 GAA and .970 SV% combined in those victories. He is currently third overall among USHL goaltenders with a .919 SV% this season. It is the second time this season he has earned the weekly goaltending honor.
