Press Release
With the 2011 event in the books, the 2012 World Jr. A Challenge host Yarmouth Mariners are planning next year’s event and have begun to sell 13 game tournmanet packages on behalf of Hockey Canada. The event, scheduled to take place at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre November 5th - 11th, has generated a great deal of excitement in the region and early tickets sales have been very positive.
The Challenge, which features two teams from Canada (east and West), the United States, Russia, Sweden and the Czech Republic is a first for Yarmouth and the host committee is wasting little time marketing the event. Under the banner of “the World is Coming”, the hosts recently began promoting tickets sales to Mariners season ticket holders and sponsors with packages going on sale to the general public on December 10th. Packages for the entire event are being sold at a price of $210 (.hst and fees included) which include all 13 games that will be played during the week.
As work gets underway to prepare for the week long event, interest in the community is growing rapidly and Host Commmittee Chair Mitch Bonnar believes this excitement has resulted in better than expected early ticket sales.
“The response so far has exceeded our expectations and we have sold a high number of packages already”, commented Bonnar. “We knew the fans in this community would get behind the event, and that fact played a key role in landing the Challenge in Yarmouth. Within just a few days of beginning to sell tickets, nearly half of the seats were committed. There’s a great deal of interest in the packages and we fully expect to sell out this event.”
MHL President Derryl Smith, who endorsed Yarmouth’s bid on behalf of the league, is not surprised by the early interest in tickets and believes Yarmouth will easily fill the venue next fall. “Yarmouth represents one of our strongest markets”, said Smith. “They have smart, passionate hockey fans in that area and this event provides them with an opportunity to take in the best Junior A hockey available. I have little doubt that this Challenge will be a complete success on many levels because of that strong community support.”
John Lynn, Chairman of the MHL Board of Governors, agrees with this sentiment and adds that Yarmouth’s community support will show the world the strength and viability of the MHL as it continues to grow as a premier development league. “As a flagship organization of the MHL, Yarmouth’s hosting the 2012 World Jr. A Challenge allows the league
with an opportunity to demonstrate the strength and quality of support for Junior A hockey in Atlantic Canada. We are pleased with early ticket sales and look forward to welcoming the World to one of the MHL’s finest hockey markets”.
