Black Hawks Defenseman Chooses Bemidji State University

Press Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks announced that defenseman James Hansen has committed to play collegiate hockey at Bemidji State University beginning next season.

Hansen has appeared in all 38 games for Waterloo this season collecting 11 points (3g, 8a) and 52 penalty minutes to go along with a plus-three rating. Two of his three goals this season have been game-winners. The 20-year-old from Maple Grove, Minnesota also spent the 2010-11 season in the USHL with the Black Hawks and recorded eight points (1g, 7a) and 49 penalty minutes in 47 games.

“He’s a steady defenseman. You know what you’re going to get when he’s on the ice,” said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O’Handley. “We’ve asked for James to contribute in new ways this season, and his offensive abilities have come out as he has gotten more comfortable.”

Two other current USHL players are also committed to Bemidji State University following their USHL careers – Lincoln Stars forward Bob Kinne and Sioux City Musketeers forward Brad Robbins.

Bemidji State University is a member of the WCHA and has 11 USHL alumni on the roster this season; Jake Areshenko (Fargo Force), David Boehm (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Drew Fisher (Sioux Falls/Indiana), Radoslav Illo (Tri-City Storm), Ben Kinne (Sioux City Muskteers), Shea Walters (Green Bay Gamblers), Cody Strang (Youngstown Phantoms), Sam Windle (Des Moines/Chicago), Matt Prapavessis (Lincoln Stars), Danny Mattson (Youngstown/Chicago/Omaha), and Mitch Cain (Des Moines Buccaneers).
