Colts’ Mathias Niederberger Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Mathias Niederberger of the Barrie Colts is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week after recording two shutouts in two games for the week ending February 5 with a goals-against-average of 0.00 and save percentage of 1.000.

Niederberger recorded his first career shutout on Friday night making 23 saves as first star of a 1-0 win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors.  He followed that up with another first star performance on Saturday night against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he stopped all 29 shots including a second period penalty shot to preserve the 5-0 shutout victory.

Niederberger, a 19-year-old German native is playing in his first OHL season after being selected 25th overall by the Colts in the 2011 CHL Import Draft.  In 34 games this season he carries a record of 19-10-1-1 with a goals-against-average of 2.77 and save percentage of .915.  In December he was one of nine CHL players that earned gold with Germany in the 2012 IIHF Division I Group A World U20 Championship.

Also considered for the award this week was Adam Brown of the Kelowna Rockets who went 2-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .952, while Domenic Graham of the Drummondville Voltigeurs went 1-0-0-1 with a goals-against-average of 1.45 and save percentage of .959.
