The Kirkland Lake Goldminers announce today that they have made a coaching change effective immediately for the balance of the regular season and playoffs.

The executive decided it was in the best interest of the team to move in a different direction in order to continue to develop and strengthen the organization both on and off the ice.

The Goldminers are pleased to announce the appointment of Tim Zafiris as interim Head Coach effective today.

He is currently a Doctor of Chiropractic located in Temiskaming Shores.

His hockey career includes playing for the New Liskeard Cubs AAA Midgets in 1995/96 when they captured the Air Canada All Ontario AAA Championships and advanced to the National Championships.

In the 96/97 season Tim earned a number of individual awards including being Top Scorer and MVP of the Great North Midget League. During the regular season he scored 65 goals a record that still stands today. Tim was further rewarded at the National Championships where he was Top Scorer and named MVP of this prestigious event featuring all of the top midget players in Canada.

Tim continued his playing career in the Ontario Hockey League for 3 seasons as a member of both the Sault Greyhounds and London Knights playing a total of 163 games scoring a total of 31 goals and 61 points while accumulating 367 penalty minutes.

Tim attended the University of Western Ontario for 4 seasons playing in 95 games with 38 goals, 89 points and 254 penalty minutes. He was a member of the “Mustangs” team in 2002 that won the Interuniversity National Men’s Hockey Championships.

The Goldminers are very excited about the opportunity to add a coach with the credentials of Tim Zafiris and look forward to continuing to build a winning Junior A Hockey team in Kirkland Lake. Tim is expected to make his debut behind the bench this Friday when the Goldminers host the North Bay Trappers at 7:30 P.M. at the Englehart arena.
