Press Release
The Weyburn Red Wings have wrapped up their 4th Sherwood Conference pennant in the last 5 years.
The Wings took care of business on their own, defeating the Kindersley Klippers 7-3, but actually clinched before their game was even over, when Yorkton fell 2-1 in Notre Dame.
The Melville Millionaires locked up a spot in the top three, with a 4-2 win over the visiting La Ronge Ice Wolves, but like Weyburn, also received some help out of town, as Humboldt beat Estevan 6-2.
That means that familiar foes Yorkton and Melville, located a mere 25 minutes down Highway 10 from each other, will battle it out in a Best-of-Seven Conference Semi-Final, expected to begin the weekend of March 2nd. Who gets home ice is still far from settled. The Terriers' lead over the Mils is now just 1 point, and both teams have 3 games remaining.
It also means the Sherwood Conference Survivor series will feature Estevan up against the Notre Dame Hounds, with the Bruins having home ice advantage. Game 1 of the Best-of-Five is expected to be Friday, February 24th at Spectra Place, with Game 2 likely the following night in Wilcox. The winner will face Weyburn in a Best-of-Seven Conference Semi.
Coltyn Sanderson had a six point night in Weyburn's win, with 2 goals and 4 assists. Ryan Marshall scored twice for Humboldt as the Broncos threw 55 shots at Estevan's Steven Glass. Matt Smidt made 34 saves in Notre Dame's win over Yorkton, while Ian McNulty scored his 35th of the season for Melville, and added one assist.
In other action Saturday, Andy Desautels made 35 saves and Flin Flon shutout Battleford 2-0.
The Bauer Conference still doesn't have a single playoff spot set in stone, although Humboldt is now one win or one Battleford loss away from sewing up first.
Flin Flon knows they'll be in the Survivor Series, but could still get home ice in that series. They also don't know yet if they'll play La Ronge or Nipawin in that Best-of-Five. La Ronge trails Nipawin by 4 points for 3rd, with one game in hand.
