Winterhawks Sign Dominic Turgeon

Press Release

The Portland Winterhawks have signed Dominic Turgeon, the team’s third round pick, 64th overall, of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.

Turgeon is playing this season for the Colorado Thunderbirds U16 AAA team of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League, where he leads his team in scoring with 23 goals and 14 assists for 37 points in 35 games.

“Dominic comes from an athletic family and is a very mature player for his age. He is a smart two-way forward with excellent playmaking and puck skills. Right now he is playing against all the elite midget teams in the U.S. and from our assessment he is one of the top players in his age group,” said Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “Dominic had numerous options available to him, and we’re excited he’s chosen to sign with us.”

Turgeon is the son of former NHL player Pierre Turgeon, the first overall pick of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft who amassed 515 goals and 812 assists for 1327 points in 1294 games with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche in 19 seasons from 1987 – 2007. Prior to his NHL career, the elder Turgeon played two seasons for the Granby Bisons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and registered 116 goals and 152 assists for 268 points in 127 games.
