Vees Edge Slammers In Final Minute To Win 2012 RBC Championship

The Penticton Vees (4-2) edged the Woodstock Slammers (2-4) 4-3 Sunday night in Humboldt, Saskatchewan in Game #13 (Final) of the Royal Bank Cup. With the win, the Vees are the 2012 Royal Bank Cup Champions. The Slammers are Silver Medalists in their first ever appearance at the national championship.

Steven Fogarty and Travis St. Denis led the Vees with 1 goal and 1 assist each while Mike Reilly added 2 assists. Bradley Greene led the Slammers with 2 goals while Nick Huard added 1 goal and 1 assist.

St. Denis (powerplay), assisted by M. Reilly and Mario Lucia opened the scoring at 6:13 to give the Vees a 1-0 lead. Steven Fogarty, assisted by M. Reilly and Curtis Loik scored at 12:18 to extend the lead to 2-0. Greene, assisted by Huard and Evan Carmody scored at 13:19 to get the Slammers on the scoreboard at 2-1 after the first period. Huard (powerplay), assisted by Tim Campbell and Sam Caldwell scored at 7:48 to tie the game at 2-2 after the second period. Greene (second goal of game), assisted by Connor Tresham and Ben MacSwain scored at 1:30 to give Woodstock the lead at 3-2. Bryce Gervais, assisted by Troy Stecher and Fogarty scored at 11:10 to even the score at 3-3. Joey Benik (powerplay, game winner), assisted by St. Denis and Logan Johnston scored at 19:09 for the win.

Penticton went 2 for 7 on the powerplay while Woodstock went 1 for 3.

Michael Garteig stopped 22 of 25 shots for the win while Matt Murphy stopped 30 of 34 shots in the loss.

the last 9 minutes the vees played with 7 people on the ice 5 players and 2 refs. Even Don Cherry and Ron Mclean saw it as a farse worth mentioning on coaches corner.
