Grizzlies hire former rival coach Bestwick

Press Release

The Victoria Grizzlies have named two-time BCHL Coach of the YearBill Bestwick as their new Head Coach and General Manager.

Bestwick comes to Victoria following a successful 12-year career as coach and GM of the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers. He led the Clippers to two BCHL Fred Page Cups in 2004 and 2007. Bestwick has notched over 600 career wins and was named BCHL All Star Coach five times. He has also worked in senior management positions in hockey operations and development.

“Victoria is arguably one of the most desirable cities to live in and play, with state of the art facilities and a strong foundation of supporters and fans, this represents a perfect opportunity to re-build the franchise to Junior hockey prominence in B.C.," said Bestwick.

Bestwick’s talent for getting the most from his players has garnered a lot of notice from NHL scouts over the years. He has graduated hundreds of players to NCAA, CIS, and professional careers, including well-known stars such as Ryan O'Byrne, Jason Garrison, and Tanner Glass among others.

“Bill Bestwick is a great choice for Victoria,” said NHL defenceman, former Grizzly and player under Bestwick, Ryan O’Byrne.“I played for Bill in my last year of Junior A, prior to going to Cornell in the NCAA, he helped me become a better all around player, in all three zones on the ice, as well as helping me mature off the ice.

“I have always said that playing for Bill Bestwick greatly assisted in my preparation and my transition to the NCAA level, which ultimately lead to the NHL."
