Wolves to Participate in Junior Club World Cup

Press Release

On April 18th, 2012, Mark Burgess and Blaine Smith attended a press conference in Moscow at the KHL offices, outlining our participation in the Junior Club World Cup. This is the brainchild of the CEO of the Russian Junior Hockey League, Dmitry Efimov. For the last 3 months Dmitry had been in close contact with Hockey Canada, the CHL and Mark Burgess to recruit a CHL team to participate in the 2012 cup. “We are delighted to host the Sudbury Wolves in Omsk this August,” states Efimov, “We were very impressed with the serious approach the team’s management took towards their participation in the JCWC. The team’s owner and president personally came to Moscow to meet my team and to visit all the facilities where the Sudbury Wolves will live and play. I’m sure we will not disappoint them. It will be the best JCWC ever with 10 very strong hockey teams from 10 countries participating. See you in Omsk.”

2011 was the first year the tournament took place, with the Red Army winning and a junior tier II team from the AJHL – Ft. McMurray Oil Barons, going 0-3 in the tournament.

“We are a great fit for the tournament – we have a large number of players returning, so we will have a limited training camp upon our return, and my family has an extensive business relationship with Eastern Europe and Russia,” states Mark Burgess. The Russians are very excited to have a CHL team participating in this year’s tournament. They expect the attendance to double as a CHL team is at the tournament as well as the Russian Representative is the home team, Omsk Hawks.

We will be bringing over 20 skaters, 2 goalies and will have our 2 new European draft picks join us while we are there. The tournament allows for players born in 1991 and later, however “we will have no ’91 born players coming, but we will be bringing 5 ’92 born players. We will be one of the youngest teams in the tournament.”
Scott Salmond (Senior Director, Hockey Operations/National Teams – Hockey Canada) is excited about a CHL team participating in this year’s tournament, “Hockey Canada is pleased that the Sudbury Wolves will be participating in this year’s Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. This event is a great opportunity for Canadian coaches and players to experience international hockey in a competitive short term environment.”

Dave Branch, the President of the CHL is also looking forward to the Wolves’ participation in the tournament, “The Ontario Hockey League is proud to have the Sudbury Wolves be the first CHL team to participate in the Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. This is a tremendous opportunity for the Sudbury Wolves to face international competition and we are delighted to have the club serve as ambassadors for the OHL/CHL and for Canada at this event.”

The team will depart Toronto on Monday, August 13th and fly to Moscow. While in Moscow the team will visit the Kremlin, Red Square and other Russian landmarks and will hit the ice for the first time at the CSKA – Red Army training facility. They will train there for 3 days before flying a private charter to Omsk for the start of the tournament on August 18th. The team will be joined by 2 coaches – Trent Cull and Jeff Beukeboom, 2 trainers, general manager Blaine Smith, assistant general manager Ken Mackenzie, marketing executive Curtis Hall, team doctor Dr. Jake Holub, as well as numerous members of the Burgess Family. Ian Ellis, the Director of Marketing and Special Events, will represent the OHL/CHL and Darryl Boynton, the Manager of Hockey Canada Regional Centre – Ontario, will represent Hockey Canada. The team is set to return August 27th with training camp commencing September 1st.

The tournament takes place at two arenas in Omsk:
